- I have spent over $400 on car purchases in my lifetime. 2 VW's were virtually free-a '58 & '59, '83 Mercury Capri and '83 Toyota hatchback, which I drove forever.when it got too decrepit looking, I painted the whole thing, except the tires and windows flat, glaring white. The pivotal moment in my car consciousness was walking into the Buick Dealership in 1959, at the age of 10, and looking at that fantastic fin, which was nearly as tall as I was, and thinking: "This is the greatest moment of my life!"
