Forgotten Future: Alternate Designs for the Continental Mark II

Group 2 – Vince Gardner

The next three designs are from Vince Gardner. While Vince may not be a household name, his automotive design work certainly is. Vince started his career fresh out of high school as a model builder working for legendary designer Gordon Buehrig at Auburn, where he assisted on the design of the boat-tail speedster and the Cord 810/812.

Design 3

Designs 3 and 4 are both very similar. From the circular door handle buckets to the waterfall front grille to the vertically split rear quarter windows to the rear spare tire, Designs 3 and 4 are full of homages to the original Continental.

Design 4

The fatal flaw for Gardner’s first two submissions, in my opinion, are front end treatments that are too plain. This would not have competed well with the big “Dagmar” bumpers that Cadillac was offering, so I think Ford was wise to pass on both of these.

Design 5

Gardner’s third design is ever more suggestive of the original continental, with the full rear wheel skirts and full “Continental Kit” spare. The front is the only place where Design 5 is somewhat adventurous, and I think it mostly works here. The only thing that would have made it better is fully hidden headlights, as on 1942 DeSoto, or the Cord that Gardner collaborated on.

While it is hard to say for sure, Design 5 might have been the most appealing to buyers of the original Continental. Whether it would have made as many conquest sales is open to speculation.
