Diesel hood ornament, I’m going to say for an Oldsmobile. Other than that, I have nary a clue as how to distinguish which Oldsmobile model it is attached too.
It might be for a Buick or Chevrolet too, but my first guess is Oldsmobile. I’m sure it is not for a Chevrolet or GMC diesel truck.
The top to that hood ornament was used on every model of Oldsmobile Diesel. Cutlass,Ciera,88,98 and Toronado. From 78(except the 78 Toronado) to 1985. The base was the only part that was different between these models.
Being attached to Oldsmobile that certainly is one of their emblems. An early one, like 78-79-80, probably a Delta 88. Above the “DIESEL” word should be a orange band. Getting picky, I will do it like PRICE IS RIGHT – closest to the year but not going over – 1979 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Sedan.
I remember a funny story, we had a very nice 79 Olds 98 Regency coupe for a customer, black paint, black top, dark red cloth pillow, totally loaded with the diesel. After the crank cracked the customer elected to replace the motor with a conventional 350 Rocket. Well the hood ornament and trunk decals are usually not replaced. He was on the lot and a customer came by admiring the car and noticed the diesel emblems and said “Boy your car sure is quiet!”
I was thinking along those same lines, but the diesel was a late 1978 introduction and we really did not see a lot of equipped cars until the 1979 model year. Which is why I ultimately guessed a 79 Olds Delta 88 which I think had the highest percentage of diesel installations as any model of GM.
Olds Diesel. Presumably an 88 or 98
+1. I’ll guess ’83 Eighty Eight.

Buick didn’t use a specific “Diesel” hood ornament. And Chevy only used “Diesel” hood ornaments on trucks. Has to be Olds.
Yes, Olds Diesel, and since I don’t think we can tell which one, I’ll pick a Ciera because it’s probably the least likely.
I forgot about the “diesel” hood ornament. I think I’ve probably seen more 88s than 98s with that engine so my vote is for the 88.
We had an 85 Diesel Cutlass Supreme, So I will put my money on that.

Sooo, I’m going to say Toronado.

Old Diesel. Cutlass? 88? 98?
1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Diesel
1980’s Oldsmobile diesel.
79 Olds 98 Coupe, probably in green.
One that may have also attended SXSW this year?
Bingo
How about the first year of GM’s infamous diesel, 1978 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Diesel?

The diesel ornaments looked so similiar. I have a closer shot of the ornament from the 83 Oldsmobile 98 Regency in the picture above.
The neat thing diesel hood ornament is a that it is side shot of a piston with some red “ignition” going on the top.
