Styling fads have given us some oddities over the decades. Last week, we pondered the mysteries of Nash’s faired-in front wheels. I won’t give too much away by saying that the seventies were a major contributor to the catalog of styling curiosities. Just look at how that fenderline swells out over that wheel. There’s room for dualies under there. Or maybe it was intended to keep the sun’s damaging rays from the tire. Almost alien…

I’m going to guess a 70s something Plymouth satellite/Sebring ish kinda thingy?
Yeah that’s ugly alright. Especially when viewed from the rear.
The one thing that I hate the most about older American car’s styling… And the tires are so skinny too. They look like elephants with chicken legs, huge cars with teeny tiny tires tucked well away on a narrow chassis. It looks like the tires are barely able to support the vehicle. Why someone think they’re attractive or even acceptable is beyond me. Thank God those days are long in the past, and not likely to come back anytime soon.
’71 to ’73 Polara / Monaco
Got to be a Mopar of some sort.
The 1970’s Falcon hardtops had rear wheel arches like that, purely to fit a 10″ rim and wide tire for racing! Of course they looked a little silly in stock form with a 6″ rim…
Please excuse me for being Off The Topic.
But I don’t know Where else To ASK this Question about JALOPNIK if any of you Know…
QOTD or As for Question Of The Day, Is There a Trick To See The Comments/replies section ?
Just Thought someone reading hear might know. TY.
Hah! That’s about like walking into your local family-owned auto parts shop and asking them, “Can you tell me which aisle the air filters are located at in the Pep Boys down the street?”
Under “related stories” it should say “discussion threads”, and in the same horizontal blue bar, click on the word “all” to the right.
Thank You and I tried that, it didn’t work.
I’ll Keep Trying.
Please Excise my misplaced question. Sometime my need for car stuff is pretty insatiable.
Don’t get me wrong, CC is my favorite website. Just seems to me, that it has been here that I have read others Very frustrated with navigating “j”. Layout.
AMC Matador
Fuselage era Dodge Cornet sedan. Probably a 71 or 72
looks 70s Valiant VH/VJ from here perfect for fitting wide wheels but ridiculous on showroom rims.
I know this is not the vehicle…but this styling feature seemed very apparent on the ’68 Impala…I’m picturing a two-door hardtop with base wheels & the once-common wheelcover. This pic I found on the net is a Custom coupe but you get the idea.
It emphasizes the low, wide look of these cars…it’s apparent on the ’67 – ’69 big Chevies and I really like it. The ’70 Chevrolets went to 15″ wheels — although the ’69 and ’70 body styles are very similar, the larger wheels makes them look quite different to me.
Ugh..wrong picture, sorry. THIS is the custom coupe
