There were lots of guesses for the Buick. caljn almost got there with his guess of a ’64 Wildcat/LeSabre, but chrisgreencar was the one to positively identify it as an Electra. Our next CC is definitely not a New Yorker Fifth Avenue or Electra 225. What has Richard Bennett found for our next CC?

1992 Mercury Capri
Third-gen Mercury Capri.
EDIT – “Curse my metal body. I wasn’t fast enough.”
I’ll third for the “bad” Capri.
Yep, it’s an Australian-built, Mazda-engined Capri…the FWD MX-5/Miata wannabe.
Darn, I must have been away. I knew it was the Aussie made Crapi. Everytime I see one, I am reminded that they exist, otherwise, I would totally forget about them. Shame though, it was one of the few attempts at giving Mercury some unique product. Though it probably would have sold better at Ford dealerships.
Woulda sold ok if it was any good in its original Mazda form its ok but Ford removed all the good points like build quality and weather proofing during the makeover and built a complete turd
First glance I was thinking 280ZX. But I think everyone else is right. Crapi.
My first instinct was Ford little wheeled swimming pool from Broad meadows the Crapi(correct spelling) but something about the deck lid isnt right.
Edit saw one while out this arve its a Crapi
Woo-hoo, the clue’s for a car that was actually sold new here! (in its Ford format) Not sure I want to claim that ‘victory’ though. Basically a Mazda 323/Ford Laser convertible in a shapeless slab-sided party frock.
The poor Aussie Capri. Two years later than intended due to air bags, it should have come out at least a year before the Miata. It was Ghia designed after the Barchetta show car, a tiny slab sided roadster, that didn’t look any better bigger.
Cheaper than a Miata, It was faster than the Miata in Turbo X2 trim. It had a nominal back seat. Build quality was spotty. But the biggest drawback was the FWD…..and the soft suspension of the Laser it was based on.
Still they are cheap today. $2000 -$2800 will buy a nice one. I looked at a couple of them, but I’m on my second Miata now.
I’m sure it’s the Mercury Capri as well. A spectacular failure of a car.
Anyone remember the Barchetta concept car? They showed us that, and gave us the above… I was at Georgia Tech when the concept was unveiled, and saw it in person at the Hapeville assembly plant. Still looks pretty fresh…
