Join us tomorrow for the ultimate in twofers; its a combination CC and Automotive History. While many would think this is an otherwise forgettable car, it truly isn’t; the story it has is truly of epic proportions and might challenge your paradigms.
Be here. Aloha.
Something mopar, maybe a ’78 New Yorker.
That would be my guess too.
I’m positive it’s a New Yorker of that generation, although the Brougham was also offered in ’76 and ’77.
I’m gonna go ahead and say 1977 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham 4-door to be in the middle.
Brendan, you missed the little teeny Mercury god in the crest. But I can see where you went with Chrysler, as they had a similar crest right down to the double lions.
The heraldic crests of The House of Brougham! Hmmmm, lets examine the Broughamology……..the 2 lions and the Brougham font identify this as some Mercury, possibly the Le Grande Baron du Marquis of Brougham, possibly for the 1774-1778 era.
The Marquis de Brougham was fatally injured in 1779, resulting in his heir, the Grande Marquis de Panther taking the throne.
Lol, +1 🙂 And let’s not forget the Marquis de Sade, oft mentioned by C&D!
Not a Panther, but its direct predecessor, a ’75 to ’78 Grand Marquis Brougham.
You can see the ancient god Mercury right in the crest.
Good eye I had to go back and look again to find the fireman.
I’m going to say a 1971 or 1972 Mercury Marquis Brougham.
Mr. Bill

1972 Marquis Brougham
Mercury Grand Marquis – from the 70s with the cool flip lights
1971-72 Marquis Brougham.
It’s a 1974 Marquis Brougham, similar to the one driven by Steve McGarrett on Hawaii 5-0. I think his was black on black though, so I don’t think it’s the same one.
His was definitely black.
I’m already getting nauseous.
Nauseated.
Syke, I have to admit something…I’m not the biggest fan of Brougham’s either, although I simply could not pass this one up.
Just for you, my next CC after this one will be about as un-Brougham as can be.
Is it a SPECIAL presentation?
+1
I’m thinking 1975 Marquis, I owned one a few years ago that had an emblem that I’d swear is identical to that one.
its a merc….the chrysler crests had some red in them
Depending on how picky we are here (and we are really picky!) this car should be a ’73 or ’74 Mercury Marquis Brougham. And, really, a ’74.
Carmine has it nailed – Mercury Marquis. But, which one?
The Aloha clue says we are incorporating some discussion of Hawaii Five-O.
McGarrett mainly drove a ’68 Park Lane 4 door hardtop. It was followed by a 4 door hardtop that had to be a ’73 or ’74 as the true pillarless hardtop was dropped for ’75.
Most sources say the second main Mercury was a ’74. It wouldn’t surprise me if they grabbed it as the pillarless model would soon be discontinued.
That parchment color was really common, and was probably most often over a burnt orange or brown body.
Now, therefore, I do declare this to be a 1974 Mercury Marquis Brougham 4 Door Hardtop in Oatmeal over Saddle Bronze Metallic.
The second car was a ’74, and is still owned by Jack Lord’s stunt double. The ’68 was bought by a Chicago attorney and restored by him.

It was interesting how McGarrett’s car changed so little, only 2 cars over 12 years of show, 3 if you technically count the 2 door 67 Mercury used in the Five-O pilot, meanwhile Dano and the rest of the Five-O team would get new cars every year.
My hunch is that Jack Lord liked the image that the big black hardtops provided, and the fact that ’74 was the last year for Mercury to produce a true hardtop were likely a couple of factors in the low number of cars.
I really liked the series, and watched it to its end. The last season had lost the magic, most of the original cast except for Lord had left and the replacements were much younger. An attempt was made to give the show a new attitude with the new cast. It didn’t work. I would almost swear that Lord drove a Panther Grand Marquis that last season, and the attitude change in the car didn’t work either.
My favorite part of the opening credits was where we learned that Zulu was starring as Kono (who was my favorite of the cast). I always wondered why they bothered with the name change.
From what I recall there wasn’t a Panther in the last season, but I have see so little of the show beyond the 1978 season, its seems that the 68-78 season is more popular in syndication, though I have seen the final episode where McGarrett finally nails Wo Fat.
