Romania has become a significant part of the global automobile industry, with its industry leader Dacia producing the Renault/Dacia Logan that has been one of Europe’s top selling cars since its introduction in 2004. Romanian automobile manufacturers produced indigenous designs before post-Communist privatization and incorporation into multinational giants, however, and one of them became a successful export model that has lasted fundamentally unchanged into the 21st Century. Guess the identity of this model, which is to be profiled based on a rare sighting in the United States. Hint: The model is a 4×4 and is not a Dacia, or in any way connected to Dacia or Renault.
It’s probably an ARO but I don’t know the model name.
Aro has Renault engine and few other bits…
Romania? 4wheel drive? Gotta be a tractor.
It would definitely be an ARO. I remember seeing ads for them in the ’80’s, but I don’t think they sold many in Canada. I’ve seen exactly ONE parked in a storage yard at the bottom of Cherry Street here in Toronto back in the early ’90’s. It’s long since disappeared.
I don’t have a clue as to the right answer, but that picture looks like a Ford Ranger!
4×4 usually means ARO, but I didn’t think those had ANY curves! Still, if it isn’t a Dacia, it pretty much has to be an ARO.
Actually, it should be ARO 244, also called Portaro (latter called Cross Lander), with twin live axles and old Peugeot 2.5l turbo diesel. It was produced in several countries.
Used to be allegedly exported to USA…apparently, that’s true!
I still remember reading and article about it in Slovenian car magazine in 1990., where they praised its ruggedness, but not reliability (Supposedly, test car broke down several times during short test-drive!)
Could be a Rocar T.V. series (T.V. 12/14/15) of some sort, I think those were available in 4×4.
Id guess aro as well. apparently someone was planning on importing them here a few years back.
I guess it is too rounded to be an Aro…. my bet is on the TV van, also a 4×4.
Aro
Waiting for the picture……
