No, it’s not a Type 3 squareback, fastback or notchback, but the ultra-rare pickupback.
Alberto Simon found, shot and posted this 1974 Brazilian VW 1600 Variant that has been modified. That 412-type front end is original though. But it sure looks like a mish-mash.
A Variantamino.
Reminds me of a Subaru Bratt from the rear???
VW Do Brazil made some real interesting VWs. but this one takes it a step further.
Its definitely interesting…hell, I think its kinda cool. As a pickup, I’m sure its usefulness is limited, but as a boonie basher, why not?
La Camina?
(Not sure if joking…)
That’s based on a Brasilia which is actually a Type 1.
No; the is is a type 3. The Brasilia has quite different greenhouse (windshield, windows, roof, etc.) It’s a more modern design. Look at this a bit closer and you’ll recognize the type 3 upper body; more rounded
But the two are commonly confused because of the similar front ends. Only the Barzilian type 3 got this type of front end.
Don’t break down carrying a full load.
I do like the way the slant of the back of the B-pillar kind-of-sort-of matches the slant of the air intake slots for the motor. Racy!
This kind of conversion of old beaters into pickup trucks is quite popular here in Brazil and are mainly made and used by the “carroceiros”, or “cartoneros” like they are called on Argentina.
They use these cars to get and carry all the cardboard, aluminum can, glass, plastic and anything else on the curbs that can be sold to recycling companies for a change.
Here are a picture of the two most used cars by them. The yellow one is a ‘converted’ Chevrolet Caravan, and the green one is a converted Ford Belina.
That makes sense. Recycled cars for recycling!
I’d mount that spare on the front for more crash protection and to balance out the weight of the entire drivetrain being over the rear wheels.
Poor old thing .

Die Camina
Brazilian Ridgeback.
Ha! There was a “Vegamino” on eBay a week or two ago – gone now, should have saved the pix!
I like this one, though. Clever!
This one?
I searched “completed” listings.

I like it!!?????
I tried to load pictures of a volvo 200 ute on this thread the other day – but I think I broke the site. Anyway – they are on the cohort.
A little late to reply, but I found this guy’s newer brother in Durham, NC a while ago. Converted from a sedan rather than a wagon, which is all the more unusual. Very nicely finished–no sign of the former rear doors.
