Not sure if its the lighting or the angle, but boyo do those tail light extensions / fins look exaggeratedly like rocket boosters!
I think it is the lack of a roofline nearer the back, like a sedan or wagon, which would have balance it visually.
That is a remarkable piece of work. The auto equivalent of a Coke Zero 3000 flavored soft drink. What began as a flashy car, with a station wagon model, is now an out of this world auto-pickup. What’s next – make it a driverless electric SUV?
One doesn’t know if one has gone too far, until one has gone too far. Reel it back in!
the local restraut had one a 57 very similar but had single Head lamps moroon colour they had it for years wasnt used mutch
Beautiful old Ford!
Young PRNDL approves!
Let’s try that photo again…

Ford US finally built an Aussie style ute, this body style was built in OZ since 34, but Aussie didnt get the 57,58, models at all so didnt build this model, they kept the 55 going untill 59.
Did you get these ’57-’58s over in NZ, Bryce?
It seems weird now, to think we skipped an entire generation of big Fords, but it made sense at the time. Ford Australia doubtless wanted more mileage out of expensive tooling, and the old body didn’t look out of date to more conservative eyes.
I have to commend canadiancatgreen on all these excellent finds in the cohort.
Somehow the ’58 styling revisions seem to work better on here than on the sedans, hardtops or wagons. Personally I’d lower the rear so it sits level; that gold flash on the side looks like it’s going to anchor itself in the asphalt in a hundred yards or so.
I continue to believe that this was the most attractive chrome treatment of any model of 1958 Ford. These high-trim short wheelbase cars (Custom 300?) had far more attractive side trim than the bigger Fairlanes (awkward – no, you are not a Corvette) or Fairlane 500 (just garish).
A classic car. I wish some additional views had been photographed.
I remember these well, a work mate in….?1973? Dave had one to haul his dirt bikes out to Murdoc Dry Lake in style .
I don’t remember what he did to raise and beef up the suspension but unloaded on pavement it rode like a buckboard wagon .
Another fine vehicle from Ford long ago .

I belive these had 57 rear taillights and 58 front end ?
