What a great shot by Rivera Notario. It’s a Wartburg, built in the former East Germany, and he found it in Budapest, Hungary. I can’t tell its vintage, so I’m not sure whether it’s one of the older two-stroke versions, or one the ones made after 1988 with a VW EA111 four-stroke 1.1 or 1.3 L engine. I can’t exactly see a blue cloud trailing behind it, so quite likely it’s got Volkswagen power under the hood.
If you want to read more, I wrote up the full Wartburg story here. I called it “The East German Audi, In More Ways Than One.”
I see it sports the same Mint Green VW/Porsche paintwork as the 1993 Porsche Carrera RS offered. It makes for a refreshingly tasty package. Great picture.
This is the Wartburg 1.3, as evidenced by the fender flares and the turn signals next to the headlights. They are becoming more and more rare these days in Hungary, but if you keep your eyes open you can still spot some in the wild. This colour does not look factory standard to me, though, but it’s certainly an eye-catching one.
It really IS a great photo.
And marketable – if Wartburg was still inflicting its punishments on us.
“A green castle of warts heads east, crossing a Green muscle, of sorts, heading west”.
I was in the former DDR back in 1997 for the 100th anniversary of the Tatra Automobile , and Wartburgs were all over the place. Moreso than the Trabant, but there were far more Ladas around.
