Where have all the Sciroccos gone to? To Hungary, it seems, where Roshake77 shot this one posted at the Cohort. And it’s got a ram air intake grille too. That’s a new one for me.
Was this an aftermarket unit, or custom-built?
Looks a bit odd, but does the job.
Here’s the gen2’s distinctive back side. It was a bit hard to warm up to these after the brilliant little flying wedge of its predecessor.
Since the legend is that Karmann invented rust and licensed it to the Italians most of them succumbed to tinworm like my old 78 Scirocco that I scrapped in 89. It’s unfortunate because they are great cars to drive. I wonder where this slightly battered example came from since those appear to be US spec sealed beam headlights. The grille appears home made.
The second gen cars are a mixed bag for me, the car is more refined and has a more unique interior but the softer shape doesn’t look as good as the original, or the Isuzu Piazza that is also based on the Ace of Spades show car. I guess in some respects my second Scirocco was the best of both worlds with an 87 16V engine in an 81 body.
They’re European-spec Hella H4 and H1 headlamps, in a state of advanced decrepitude, in the US 165 × 100mm sealed-beam size. These weren’t just conversion lamps; they were also used in certain European-market Audi coupés. The front turn signals and the taillamp assemblies on this car are European-spec items.
The homemade grille (with ram-air ports) is actually done rather well. It’s a shame whomever put it on the car did such a half-assed job of it, i.e., it needs to be further back for it look OEM. As it is, it just looks like something he got from JC Whitney and super-glued onto the front of his car.

Spot on. The second generation couldn’t hold a candle it the original.
Aston Martin took the tail lights and used them on the Virage and Vantage!!!
The bodykit does it no favours.
