It’s also interesting to see how much bigger a Thing is compared to a New Beetle. It looks around twice the size…with less than half the horsepower under the (rear) hood. Still, they’d be fun to bomb around in on a sunny day.
The Type 181 Thing, Safari in other markets, due to a Pontiac station wagon trade name, was actually built on a Karmann Ghia chassis, being wider than a Beetle. Yes, I have one, a ’74 that was originally the same avocado green.
After a very long search, the local VW dealer was able to locate a Thing that a customer requested. The dealer is shown delivering it to the Addams family residence. A Thing for Thing!
Say, what is that Thing? 😉
A New Beetle towing someTHING based on the old Beetle. Very cool. I haven’t seen a Thing in the metal in quite a long time.

The Thing is a foot shorter than the New Beetle pulling it, it’s the perspective of the photo causing a bit of an illusion. It is, however, 5″ taller.
Ahh, good to know.
I remember these when new and thought my eyes were deceiving me.
The Thing also only weighs 2,006 lb. The NB convertible weighs 3,248 lb.

Things are a blast. I rode in one with a built 2180cc engine. Made it even more fun. 🙂
This person must have a “Thing” for VW(s). 😉
