Corey Beherens shot this Volvo A-Traktor in Markaryd, Sweden. It may not look like it, but technically this is considered and licensed as an agricultural tractor. That means it’s regulated to a top speed of 30 km/h (18 mph), but the real attraction is that it doesn’t require a license to drive, which is not available to Swedes until age 18. So 16 year olds can go cruising in these specially modified “tractors”. And they don’t always ashere to that speed limit, needless to say.
CC has the definitive web article on the A-Traktor, so head there for the full scoop.
Here’s another shot:
Note the lack of a license plate.
That’s very interesting. Agricultural and construction equipment represents a significant transportation loophole for those willing to take advantage. A wide variety of self powered equipment can be operated by someone at least 16 years old. There’s virtually no other requirements, leading the occasional teen to drive a tractor to school. In Ontario, we couldn’t get away with this Volvo, but, removing the body entirely from a full frame vehicle, like a pick up truck creates a “traction engine “, on par with a farm tractor or loader. In theory It can be driven without any license or provision, except perhaps a slow moving vehicle sign.
People who lose their license to DUI will do this in rural areas, they’ll drive a tractor, especially lawn tractors for errands.
“they’ll drive a tractor, especially lawn tractors”
I think David Lynch had that covered, cinematically.

7.4/10 would drive. Teenage me would’ve loved that.
Pretty neat .
What model year is this Volvo ? .
Will there be a discussion about that movie ? .
