Curtis Perry found an escaped VW “Doka” (Double Cabin) pickup in Portland. Did it stow away on a flight?
This side shows the single rear door. These are a hot item, and now that they’re more than 25 years old, they’re exempt from federal regulations as well as the “Chicken Tax” that kept them from being sold here in the first place.
Beyond cool! Not only for its intrinsic value and utility but also for its provenance.
Way cool, but imagine carrying 2600 lbs of loose stone in that! 😉
It’s even yellow.
Toyota HiAce has its pick-up version like this format since it was introduced in 1960s. I understand this type of van from Japan has never been popular in US, but it is better than the VW micro bus (both type).
We also see Isuzu Elf and Toyota Dyna (in US it is sold through Hino) are never able to match the full size pickup and van in commercial market.
Always thought the El Camino was the ultimate business in the front and party back mullet mobile. Not after seeing this Doka. After all that serious business in Frankfurt it picked the perfect place to party in Portland.
Things like the Chicken Tax shine an unflattering light on the truth behind the curtain of a country that loves to bellow and bleat and thump its chest and selfgratulate and preach about free markets and free trade.
Amen. Love the tone of your comment; that about sums up the ‘stereotypical American’ we see on the TV news – Americans I’ve met almost cringe at the stereotype. But other countries have their own ‘governmental inconsistencies’ as well. And their own stereotypes.
On a related note I spotted an Iveco fire fire engine from the Rudendorf Germany volunteer fire department in front of the Bend Oregon bottle drop. I should post to the cohort
This one spent some time in the UK after leaving Frankfurt. Here’s the ad that presumably got it sold on to Portland. And more info from linked images is available too by googling the KLT-0509 I.D. number.

My Tigard High School drafting teacher bought one of these new in 1982 or 83. I have no clue how he got it here. He was still driving it around town in the early 2000’s, then it vanished. ( I reckon he passed away )
