Photos from the Cohort by L Seddon.
Lincoln Town Cars of the late ’70s have made repeat appearances here at CC, as it’s a favorite of the Brougham Epoch. And this one find is a fine addition to those previous ones; a pristine ’78 Town Car, in a setting that almost makes these shots seem out of a Lincoln brochure. Maybe I should get AI to generate human figures to complete the brochure-like setup?
This time, the vehicle is in the UK. And as it stands, surrounded by the kind of dignified Old World setting (quite literally) that ’70s advertising was so fond of emulating.
See what I mean?
Still, the photos come from today, and as told in the original Cohort caption, were taken in a medieval village in the Howardian Hills of North Yorkshire. The Continental is a recent import, originally sold in Kentucky; reaching the UK in 2019. The car’s color is “Medium Silver Gray” and carries a 460CID V-8.
Of course, the Town Car makes quite a contrast against these Old World surroundings. More contrasts can be seen in this shot as well, with a modern black Suzuki photobombing nearby. The Conti looking just as otherworldly against it, and around any modern machinery if one thinks about it.
The one thing is that these medieval dwellings may be Old World, but perhaps not as “Grand” as the Continental’s lines demand. But maybe I’m nitpicking. After all, the presence of a pristine Continental is grand enough by itself in any setting.

LINCOLN, What a Luxury CAR should be and ONCE was. At one time I owned a 78 Town Coupe. But I must point out that Lincoln offered a 400 and 460 V8. 78 was the last year for the 460. In spite of massive size and weight, the 460 was more than enough to burn rubber. A Founding Member of the GREAT AMERICAN LAND YACHT SOCIETY, 😉 I believe these Lincolns exceeded my belief that Too Much is NEVER enough. OTT excessive chromed luxury on the GRAND scale. Small wonder buyers bought so many, shifting from downsized Cadillac. I’ve since owned various upscale vehicles, including Cadillacs. My next Lincoln was a 1989 Town Car Signature Series 👌 and currently am fortunate to be driving a 2007 Town Car Signature Limited ( the last gasp of traditional American Luxury sedans). Now even LINCOLN has turned to glorified trucks masquerading as Luxury vehicles. As I stated at the beginning, this 78 testifies to the ultimate expression of what a Luxury CAR should be.
Amen. Couldn’t agree with you more.
Weirdly enough, it doesn’t look all that put of place. Maybe it’s the Rolls grill lol.
Did you really laugh out loud?
Stately indeed! While at Home Depot I was getting into my recently purchased 2004 Town Car when another 04 pulled up next to me. Of course I started chatting with the driver, a gentleman in his 40s. This was his 13th TC!
Curious as to how much tax has to be paid on such a large, powerful car.
Zero. It’s over 40 years old.
there will be some when he fills it up £1.40 a litre/ £5.32/US gallon!
Kevin Kline driving and shouting, “A$$hole” when he clips another driver?
If he’d moved forward about a foot that top shot would be perfect in its symmetry. Pretty good as is.
The vertical metal bar, lends the illusion of a magazine spread. Reminds me of the style of ads, Ford/Mercury ran in the early ’80’s, featuring profile views, over full spreads.
Sample.
Vintage Lincolns of this era, still linger on the street, and at car shows. Even if their size, and so out-of-date styling, make them curious dinosoaurs. It is the fashions, and hair styles in concurrent ads, that really date these cars for me.
When was the last time you saw a Sandy Duncan/Geraldine Ferraro hairstyle on someone? Like a distant other lifetime. lol
While working on Hillarys first primary, I had a campaign round sign on both rear windows of my then 89 Fleetwood Brougham deElegance. Currently Biden my time for the 🎵 KAMALA 🎶WALZ! 🎵 😉. Whatever YOUR choice, V O T E ! 🇺🇸 It’s not just a right, but a responsibility! God Bless America.
Easy to miss, but the sunset captured in the driver’s and rear side window in the final pic, is quite beautiful. A touch you’d see in ads.
