I stepped out into the crisp fall sunshine for a stroll in the ‘hood this morning, and came across this eclectic three-some. I instantly thought of our newest CC writer, Mike Butts/MikePDX, who has at least two of these cars in his driveway too, although the model years might be a bit off. Needless to say, Mike’s hidden-headlight debut was superb. And we’re always open to new submissions, if you’d like to give it a shot too.
Speaking of these cars and Mike, maybe it’s apparent why he chose that subject as his first. Now how about a nice ElCamino for your driveway, Mike?
El Camino! We do have three cars at our house now, functionally much like this trio.
That is a red NA (’90-’97) Miata like the one I just got. It has leather seats, but mine has 15″ alloys. I’m glad to see its top down on a clear but chilly morning. I drove mine into work this morning, top up for now.
I did have a first-gen Prius, my 2001 was one of the first on US roads (build date 8/1/00). I had that aqua green they all have, and not quite this many bumper stickers. After 150K miles, I replaced it with a red 2010 Prius, which is bigger, faster, more efficient and better looking.
For carrying loads, an El Camino wouldn’t do, if only because the dogs would jump out and the skis would fall out. Lily’s daily driver is a ’94 Subaru wagon, the most common car in Oregon it seems. But the mid-century-modern house on the corner often has a cherry red Falcon Ranchero out in front, with matching red bed cover, that gets regular use for their endless landscaping projects.
Thanks again for the kudos, Paul, it’s a blast!
And to think I was about to berate you for you crass mistake in the headlight part 2 article mistaking a Honda Prelude for an Acura Integra but someone beat me to it. 😀
BTW, my band opened a show in Seattle for a band of two cute girls called Butts. Did they name themselves after you? (No joke, youtube them.)
Welcome Mike!
That Prius makes the ElCamino look small.(I know it’s the angle of the pic..) I wonder what year the Elky is?
It’s a ’73-Earl’s car.
I want to believe that. I have a bit of a thing for 73 GM A/G/A “special” body cars..
So how does one tell from this angle? Are there enough detail differences? I thought the the rear bumper/tail lights on the ElCa and the Malibu wagons stayed the same through the whole five years of this design.
That vintage ElCamino has the length in front where you cant see.
Mom and her husband have a BMW X3 and a pristine ’85 El Camino in the driveway.
Prior to this, they had a ’96 Corvette and a Kia Optima in the same driveway.
Consistency doesn’t seem to be their long suit.
