On those occasions I find myself at Lowes (I prefer our local Jerry’s) I’ve noticed a cluster of cars at the far end of the parking lot, some of which are rather interesting. Yesterday, the grouping was worth stopping for and peeling off a few shots. Here’s another angle:
Eclectic little bunch; eh? I suppose the nicely-kept conversion van back there almost deserves to be in the shot too. I’m feeling generous:
If i could nominate an ecclectic collection of cars in the absence of photos, I would suggest what I saw lined up at a stop light in Richmond, CA a few weeks ago, my ’74 Peugeot 504, a ’63 Falcon Futura convertible (top down, dog in back seat) and a Hummer H2 with mariachi music pouring out the open windows.
Sort of like the high school lunchroom where the kids with the blue hair and the wild clothes sit together. They are certainly happier there than with the snotty rich kids (Audis and BMW Crossovers) or with the boring kids (Taurii and Camrys) or with the hicks (Ford and Chevy pickups). Come to think of it, it looks like the most fun place in the lunchroom. 🙂
Good comparison, jp! LMAO
It would have been perfect if there was a Panther or a B-body in that space between the Benz and custom van.
I think the point of that section of the parking lot is “no boring cars.” Of which the Panther and B-bodies are the kings of the classification.
Boring is in the eye of the beholder, the point is that they are cars that are liked by most of CC’s readers, and there are are a good number of CC readers that like B-bodies and Panthers, even if you find them “boring”.
Is a 90 something Cherokee Laredo any more interesting than a B-body/Panther?
Yeah, the Cherokee will accelerate with the Panther or B-body and probably handle about the same on the skidpad. And then there’s something called off road capability, which the Panther and B-body don’t possess.
So why are the Panther and B-body exciting? I can find no reason why. I’ve driven a Panther and can’t understand why people love them so much. So they’re durable. So is a Volvo 240, and the Volvo has a much more comfortable and ergonomic interior whose seats don’t make one’s butt numb on a trip over an hour.
Skidpad, with a Cherokee…..yeah, I dont think so. Nevermind, sorry I even nominated a domestic car or gasp……a GM car. I forgot where I was, TTAC part 2.
How about an awesome Renault 5 LeCar?, yeah, thats awesome.
Again, the fintail Benz is not really exciting either, its about unusual/interesting cars.
Sorry for even having a different opinion.
I would think a Suzuki X-90 or a 1st gen Plymouth Valiant would fit with that crowd.
What’s the badging on that fintail’s rear… looks too long to be stock.
200 DIESEL
It’s nice to see there are still nice original Saab 900s being driven. I had one a few years ago and I miss it just about every day. I have a 9-2x/Saabaru now but the character that made the 900 so unique is totally absent.
My dad had a Subaru GL just like that one but white when I was younger. You certainly don’t see many of those anymore.
They’re such neat little cars. Someone should do a write-up on those old GL (STD) hatchbacks.
The molester van lurks in the shadows, waiting…
The other cars look cool, especially the Benz, but the old conversion vans creep me out.
Hmmm, yes, a few months ago when I started looking for curbside classics to shoot, I realized almost immediately that the parking area for retail employees is always worth checking out.
At the same time, I’ve noticed that here in the Houston area, cars over fifteen years old seem to be almost non-existent compared to the west coast states, despite it being a relatively rust-free environment. It is ridiculously hot and humid during the summer, however, so here’s my theory: when the a/c goes, the car gets junked.
Reminds me of a quote from Swiss-American photographer Robert Frank in the 1960’s. Someone asked him why he took so many pictures of cars in America, and he said something like, “Look around. It’s all you can see.”
My least favourite MB model, together with a lovely SAAB fast-/hatch- back!
Oh wow, not just a Saab 900, but the Saab 900 SPG, and looking pretty cherry at that. Nice.
