Sitting at a red light a week or so ago, I spotted this Camry. Not exactly the beige blandmobile the Camry is generally thought of on “teh internets,” is it?
I think someone got their parents’ old car and decided to make it their own. It is somewhat shocking to think that in thirty years’ time, today’s kids may well be waxing nostalgic on their first car–a 2002 Camry LE.
All it needs is the sort of spoiler one might have seen on a Chaparral 2E, which seem to be popular with folks running ‘tuner’ Saturns.
The stripes and hubcap alone are good for an easy 20 horsepower. He just better keep the windows up or that flapping headliner could cause some cranial damage at hyper-velocity speeds.
And I thought Toyota headlines were bulletproof.
Nice, a drooping headliner in an 11 YO ‘yota, how quaint…
Actually, this is semi in good taste as it makes a more or less generic ‘yota look different, even though it’s not the usual green, or silver, or other non nondescript color.
Tom, don’t you just hate that “Teh” typo? I generally catch mine…
I see drivers dress up an occasional Camry, but it’s rare. Impala owners are a different bunch. I see lots of Imps decorated – some with stripes like one at out local Kroger store and many others that afix chrome stick-on B pillar accents and such. All I did to my 2012 LTZ is add the Impala emblem and “IMPALA” letters behind it on the front doors just below the side rub strip. Adds a bit of class, plus the nice pinstripe really makes it stand out.
As long as a car isn’t overdone, I like when people do these things.
Just goes to prove one can be an enthusiast about a very common car!
There’s a whole subculture that mods Honda Accords and with all of the greatness attributed to the Camry, I’ve never noticed a similar trend with those cars. I’m not attempting to be snarky, I’m really wondering out loud why all of the love for Accord and little for the Camry?
As others have said, this looks like a young person working with what he has available to him. Not my cup of tea, but, more power to them.
I have to agree that someday there will be a nostalgia for Camrys, imagine how many people have learned to drive in one, been shuttled around in one, maybe even got laid for the first time in one… Everything we did in our cars, someone will do in a Camry.
Also available in Toyota Rally Blue, with a 1.0 liter 3 cylinder.
J.C. Whitney or their alter ego Warshawsky (sp) and company are what allowed me to keep beaters running for years. When overseas they may be the servicemans best friend in the automotive business.
Where’s the Fart Can Exhaust? Even if the owner blew his bankroll on the striping, surely he could have found an old coffee can to FAKE one.
Looks fairly untacky, but the drooping headliner is funny especially for a Toyota.
No stick on “Buick” front fender ports? I’ve seen more F150s with them than Buicks.
Chiming in late, but I have seen more and more Camry’s of this generation with drooping headliners. I think this generation has aged very badly. Always yellowed headlights, poor paint, and what now looks to be like drooping headliners. Plus the styling in general just hasn’t aged well. These look like big, fat, old Buicks with enormous taillights. And to think I thought they were quite forward-looking when first released.
Will be interesting to see if the headliners become epidemic as on the Honda Civics from two generations ago.
As for the mods..no words. Other than I have seen much, much, much worse here in LA.
