It wasn’t just the signal orange roof on this old Scout that got me to stop. It might have taken that, given how many of these there are and I’ve already shot. And it wasn’t the Camaro; I’ve made my feelings clear enough on that subject. But the pairing of the two was truly worth it, a fine juxtaposition of the old and new. For those two together, I even got out and took some shots from the front and back.
Neither of them are going to win a beauty contest. Maybe that’s the only thing they have in common, along with four wheels.
Now if only the Camaro’s roof got the same color treatment as the Scout, I’d really be jazzed. Maybe in a couple of decades?
” Maybe in a couple of decades?”
In a couple decades that Camaro body may be riding on that Scout frame!
I had a Scout very much like that one with the little IH 266 V8 and 4 spd. I traded my Scirocco straight across for it. It got 18mpg all the time.
Once a friend of mine dared me to try and get up a near vertical hill by his place. Sure I said, no problem, well I broke the front driveshaft and it speared into the side of the hill so that I could not get down. I had to dig the shaft out to get off the hill. And all the while gas was pouring out of the filler due to the extreme angle. And then I twisted the rear shaft in half doing a burnout.
Soon after that I was going down the freeway one day when the hood decided to let go. I had the top off and it folded itself right over the windshield frame just over my head. So I pulled over and jumped up and down on it to flatten it out then I bungie corded it down. I got about a quarter mile down the freeway when it just flew clean off, luckily it landed in the center of the highway. So I backed up, drove over it several times to flatten it, put it in the back and took it home. I did eventually get a new hood, but that story is just a small slice of life with the Scout.
I would argue that what each company considered to be the ideal “deomgraphic” for each vehicle (when new) was relatively the same (male, 25 to 35 yrs old) and the actual purchasers (I’m gonna guess based on the Camaros in my area, 45+ males trying to recapture some youth.)
So does the plate on the Camaro mean it’s driven by a male nurse? I don’t know what that implies but is says something…
