A couple weeks ago, I saw this weary but hardworking Impala coupe next to a Buick GS400 convertible. Now, it’s attracted a Fox-platform Lincoln Continental and a Pontiac Firebird.
And a Volvo 122. Your older car may fall into the Impala vortex regardless of its country of origin.
I wouldn’t stop for any one of these on its own. In fact, I’d probably drive faster to get away from that Lincoln–there are so many ways to get a 302 V8 without an imitation Seville trunk! Still, even if you ignore the Lexus in the driveway, this lineup easily represents more than 150 automotive service years, and that’s pretty impressive.
That 1968 Impala coupe reminds me of a similarly, well-worn 68 Biscayne station wagon in my neighborhood. Pretty strippo, with a three-on-the-tree and no air con.
A couple of weeks ago…
It’s just awful how it is snowy here now ( around Southern Michigan. It was snowy all over in Northern Michigan last week. ) I am almost ready for older cars. Sigh*
Never been a fan of this body style on the full sized Chev. I think the car is way big for all those curves; kind of foreshadows the Colonnade body though.
That Impala must be really fun – all the cool cars want to hang around with it. 🙂
I never warmed up to the Continental’s midcycle “aero” facelift, preferring the more upright version of the earliest ones, and I have a similar feeling towards the 68Impala(I think 67 was the best on this body) so I gotta pick the 75 Firebird as my fav of the four.
Considering the 74/75 were the only years the Firebird was somewhat visually effected by the 5mph standard(with the black rubber strips) it still pulled it off so much better than the Camaro. Only thing I never quite warmed up to were the somewhat busy looking vents on the lower valance, the 76 was much cleaner.
Those fake vent openings are a great place to mount a pair of Hella driving lights 🙂 .
There’s a “twin” to that Continental on Craigslist near me, the guy is asking $800 for it because it has “wiring and suspension problems”. I really like these as they do the “bustle-back” look pretty decently, though they are best when 2-toned.
It would be a toss-up between the Lincoln and the Firebird.
The Lexus is very easy to ignore.
Just curious Rich Swartz … where was this taken?
