Who needs a rusty old bed when you have a perfectly good bed liner. In fact why not just do away with the metal bits altogether?
I, for one, have never doubted that the bed could rust right out from underneath the bedliner on an 80’s Hilux…
I’m just gonna say it: this is actually a pretty brilliant idea. Beats the usual hacked-together “flatbed” that I usually see on these old Pickups.
Of course you could just man up and spend $1200 bucks on a flatbed made by an actual company. (Says the man with a CM flatbed on his truck purchased and installed for the princely sum of $1800.)
I’d seen something like this in the Michigan UP- rusty remains of the metal bed made usable by the installation of a bed liner; VIOLA!!!
A set of mudguards and that would be kosher.
Meanwhile, the frame steadily bends under its own weight as the rust encroaches, molecule by molecule.
Relentless.
Merciless.
Awaiting its moment when a jarring movement such as a tortuous railroad crossing exerts the proper pressures making the bend a bow and the shocked occupants realize it is time to acquire ample angle-iron and weld the frame halves together.
