Given a list of all the potential low-riders I’d imagine a 1990s Toyota 4Runner would be near the bottom. And yet someone has gone out and done it. Interestingly the radical lowering seems have shifted the visual focus to the glass area which almost looks to be so large as to be out of proportion with the rest of the truck. In addition to the air suspension the front inner fenders have been removed to fit some large and rather bling wheels. Looks like this one has received a General Motors LSx V8 engine as well. This 4Runner’s off roading days are most certainly done.
CC Outtake: Unlikely low-rider – Toyota 4Runner

I always thought the 4Runner’s wagon body would look better, stock, on the 2wd (Hilux) truck chassis.
Putting the Surf (aka 4Runner) onto a 2wd Hilux chassis isn’t uncommon in New Zealand. It’s a quick and easy way to lower them, but it does make the proportions look a little odd.
Actually, here’s one for sale here on trademe, on a 2wd Hilux chassis:
And today’s answer for a question that was never asked is . . . . . . . . .
Ah yes, the Toyota Floor Runner. It doesn’t look like there is enough ground clearance for it to operate anywhere else.
You put air back in the bags when you want to drive it.
Driveit? dont make laugh, you mean move it.
It looks like it sunk into the ground, like a car that’s been left unmoved for 30 years.
I think everyone has the right to express themselves and exercise their talent. I would think a project like this would help a person expand both their knowledge and experience. I am just glad they did not pick a classic car for such a project.
Havent seen a Surf done like that but a lowered and fat tyred Hilux held me up on Friday night it had been lowered for looks and its drivability had been seriously hampered but its female driver wasnt about to let a 50,000kg truck trailer combination passed so I watched her bump steer and weave all over the road untill a steep hill allowed her to get away from me.
My lowerd surf powered by a little cam’d up 308 going through every thing now for road rego
I have seen a number of these done before, although not with the V8 engine. Something about this doesn’t look right, maybe it’s the black paint. A lighter color I think would make the glass less out of proportion.
I think I would really like to have one of these stock. This things just looks like a lot of problems for which I have no clue. Like Syke said. Answer to a question that hasn’t been asked.
Love the ragtop!
In an effort to try and find something nice to say about this, I agree! I’ve always loved the huge, rag-top sunroofs, although I imagine they don’t do much for structural rigidity. That’s the least of this thing’s worries, though…
I’ll never understand what is cool about this look.
At least they didn’t do this to a Cadillac Brougham…
Actually, doing this to the Surf (aka 4Runner) or Hilux utes is pretty common here in New Zealand right now. I’d see half a dozen on my way to and from work most days – usually congregated around building sites, as the owners are usually young tradesmen just starting out but wanting to look cool for the opposite sex. Not many here with Chev V8s, but loads with the Lexus/Toyota Century V8 popped in – they’re almost a bolt in job. Here’s a brief assortment of what’s on trademe currently:
I occasionally see this done to the pickup versions of these (Hilux), I doubt too many of them have the engineering certification done for the chassis mods needed
