It is like seeing an Amish Buggy next to a Ford Model A!
In August, 2016 I bought a 1986 Camry for about $600 so I could learn stick shift and get a pair of the soon to debut Oregon Trailblazer License Plates. While it was a decent car to practice on it had a bunch of deffered maintenance and was somewhat of a death trap so I did not mind when a blown Head Gasket killed it. That Camry sure took a lot of abuse. I do not know if I have seen a 1st gen Camry yet this year, they sure are rare.
Different in technology and design, but also different in terms of buyer demographics and market positioning-
The current Prius and Prius Prime probably match the same price point and buyer type served by the Camry when new, and I think the visual differences would be just as striking.
However, in the Curbside universe we take pictures as the world delivers them…
Their makers are different as black and white too. Tesla 100% battery electric, Toyota 0% battery electric. Toyota’s seriously late to the party, in spite of the head start the Prius should have given them.
The whole situation is doubly interesting given that they had bought in to Tesla years ago and the second (or was it third?) generation RAV4 Electric is basically Tesla technology…Clearly they saw something that didn’t work for them. Tesla would be better off today with a lot less drama if they had nurtured the Toyota connection further and implemented more of the Toyota Production System. It’ll make for a very interesting chapter in a book many years from now, no doubt.
The Toyota production irony is of course, that they’re building Tesla’s in the same plant that built some of the longest lasting Toyota’s (in the US at least), the pre-Tacoma pickup and the first few gens of FWD Corolla.
Yeah it would be interesting to know why Toyota and Tesla didn’t continue their partnership. Seems like it would have been a beneficial partership and if they did a full on JV for the Model 3/Toyota ??? they could have had that plant up and humming long ago and would have launched without much fewer issues.
My guess it Toyota didn’t like they way Tesla was being run and Tesla (Musk) wasn’t interested in changing his ways.
Now that you mention it…I was at the doctor’s office (just a checkup) and on my iPad with LTE, and noticed that it IS running much faster. Usually the use of cellular to visit CC is maddeningly slow, at least in these parts.
Just tried it out as logging in has been hit or miss for a couple of weeks. Then if lucky to log in then was unable to get to the home page. Today logged in easily, home page in less than 24 hours (in the past), and then over to here. Yeah!
Not only that but there is an edit button which I haven’t seen in sometime.
Nice pairing. And it made me think … I now see far more Model X’s on the road than 1st gen Camrys. Perhaps even more than 2nd gens, though the 3rd gens seem to live on forever. Times have changed.
The CC Effect strikes again.
Spotted a clean 1st gen Camry on the highway here in NH this morning. It has been easily 15 years since I can recall seeing one last. Strangely, there was no current model present for a contrast.

Which one’s the Amish buggy? The tall one with wagon wheels, black paint and no engine? 😉

. . . or the pale one with the power source that consumes corn? 🙂

The particulate emissions are terrible on these.
Yeah, but at least it doesn’t need to have any urea added. It generates its own.
But the power source does consume corn. 😉
These are easily recycled when the CPU stops working,
This electric buggy could indeed be a Tesla.

The Camry’s only 0% battery-electric if it needs to be push started.
This makes me remember Spy v. Spy from Mad Magazine.
Anyone noticed the lack of 503 time outs? The site is running like a…Tesla in Ludicrous mode. David Saunders looks to be my new hero.

Thanks to all who worked so dilligently on this!
EDIT: And I can edit my comments, too!
I’d be interested to read a postmortem on how the issues were solved.
Me too. I know David started digging into the server last night, and was at it again this morning. I’ve emailed him, but no response yet.

The interesting thing is that the Camry’s 13″ tires and wheels are only slightly larger, at 23.2″ OD than this Model X’s optional 22″ wheels.
