Dick Copello, who has a huge collection of old truck photos on his Flickr site, posted this shot of a custom 6-door GMC pickup that he spotted parked across the street from his house back in 2018. His explanation is almost too good to be true:
This truck was built for a family that had quintuplets. It was parked across the street from my house this past Sunday. NOT Photoshopped.
I’ve seen six door cabs like this on medium duty trucks but this is the first pickup I’ve seen.
I have an uncle with six kids (though, mercifully, not all at the exact same time).
I keep recommending retired limousines for him.
You just put that divider up, and whatever happens back there happens back there.
This is an even better solution!
When the “door ajar” light comes on, it will be a humdinger to sort out.
Quintuplets and therefore a six-door-Chevy?
Reminds me of the old joke about the old man who had five cats and five cat doors.
A new neighbor visiting his home asked, “Couldn’t all the cats just use one door?”
“Nope”, said the old man, “When I say SCAT I mean it!”
When dad says, “Get in the car…..”
Cool solution. I’ll bet that the only time the husband and wife are now together is for meals.
I believe that I’ve seen one like that or maybe even one with eight doors around Toronto area many years ago. It belonged to a guy with a custom stereo shop.
There’s a shop in Guthrie, OK called Custom Autos by Tim that makes six-door Excursions. What they basically do is start with a pre-2017 F-Series Super Duty SuperCrew/long-bed. That way, the chassis is closer to the right length. Then, they take the rear part of Excursion body (everything aft of and including the B-pillar), and weld it to the F-Series’ body, in place of the bed.
Someone I knew daily drove one (based on a 2012 Super Duty), but then, he and his wife had seven or eight school-age children.
Since the Excursion rode the same 137″ WB as the regular cab Super Duty, a six-door Excursion would be on the same 172″ WB as a crew cab/8′. Assuming they used crew cab doors for the middle and not longer Excursion doors.
You usually don’t see this kind of thing with post-GMT400 trucks, since the trailing edge of the crew cab doors doesn’t match the leading edge, so a little custom fabbing is needed to get it to fit. And even then, the body lines are a little off thanks to that kick-up on the window.
Centurion made 6 door Fords- Excursions and Heavy Duty F- series for many years.
I saw an old F-Series 6 door just a few days ago in West Palm Beach.
