There’s wonder to be found in everyday things, regardless of where you live. In a city setting, a view into the plate glass of a retail storefront will sometimes showcase things you didn’t even know were sold. Customers and sales staff interact and exchange smiles. The sound of traffic or passing trains provides a comforting reminder of life and continuity. Even the sharp honk of a car horn can be heard as a reminder of the beautiful, organized chaos that exists in a downtown area.
As the days get shorter, many lights come on toward the end of normal business hours, washing everything in golden light. Having recently ventured downtown for the first time in over six months, I realize that these are all things I may never again take for granted. The jewel-like headlamps of this Mercedes sparkle with what would seem like optimism and the joy of rediscovery.

Low-miles R107s seem to be coming out of the woodwork in droves lately. I’m fairly certain there are at least 2 per week showing up on BaT.
I like looking at these more and more as time goes by. I am by now usually able to see past the ostentation that enveloped these like a fog and can see the car and its clean, attractive lines.
I’ve always thought that these were going to be the two seat T Bird of a younger generation. I’ve thought of getting one for a long time. Who can forget American Gigolo?
Wrong headlights for this market but these do go for cheap however that ofyten tyurns out to just be the deposit and you continue to pour money in as things go wrong, I always thought these were great cars turns out I wasnt alone in being wrong
Ha, the car that launched three failed luxury coupes. Who would argue that the reatta, allante, and tc by Maserati only came into existence as an attempt to imitate mercedes?
The market for two seater luxury coupes is very much limited to mercedes though. GM’s predictions for the allante and reatta were wildly delusional and the ridiculousness of the allante being half assembled in italy ruined what might have been an adequate car.
When I see one of these I think of the character Bobby Ewing and tv show Dallas. That makes me think of Victoria Principal.
Then I continue thinking about Victoria Principal.
.
Which is okay.
Can’t tell the color, but I own a 1987 R107 in smoke silver (just like in the 87 brochure). When I lived in Oak Park, I used to drive my 1988 anthracite grey 560SL down Lakeshore. Nothing beats that drive on a summer evening.
Great find Joe. I always think of these as the ‘Disco Mercedes’. Though it’s an ’87, I think Pebbles hit from 1988 is appropriate here.
Absolutely perfect musical tie-in! This song was one example of where the hit version that was played on the radio was a different, remixed version of the album track.
The extended mix is outstanding. I mainly posted the short version as it’s the best music video version at YT. 🙂
I rode a lot of amusement park rides the summer of ’88. And Mercedes Boy was the song heard on every ride that July and August. lol
Enjoy a great weekend Joe!
This appears to be the best video version.
