I was walking the dog down Madison Street when I noticed this very strange sight. Has Frank Gehry gotten into designing vans?
Is this even legal? I guess so, as long as it’s not wider than 102″. One better stick to the middle of the lane.
The question is: what is it?
The top has a slight angle to it.
And the passenger side sticks out eve wider. it’s starting to look like a canopy. As on a food cart.
Sure enough: a look inside confirms that.
Lots of stainless steel prep counter space.
So why not a fold-out canopy? Why does it stick out on the driver’s side? So many questions…
Looks like it would fly if you drove it fast enough.
The stock T3 is already prone to being blown around in heavy winds because of their tall and flat sides. I can only imagine what a handful this one is to drive on a windy day.
If that were driven across the Golden Gate Bridge on a more than typical windy day it would be flying. Right over the railing and into the Bay.
Solar panels?
Venting for the kitchen?
VW Vanagon Washboard Edition.
To keep rain off of patrons and out of open windows?
My guess is that this vehicle is driven very carefully from home base to job sites in as little traffic as possible.
Yeah, but why not a fold out awning that can be stowed when the van is being driven?
There’s a local food vendor here who also uses a converted VW van — the “VolksWaffle” truck. Here’s what his setup looks like:

I love that! It reminds me of a Futurliner bus….with waffles.
WTF – What’s That Flying?
Very considerate of them to put a gutter on the passenger side, but why not just serve on that side?
They’d better fill their water and gas tanks before driving.
I generally obey the rules of the road these days, but still have a fondness for driving at high speeds in a straight line when conditions are appropriate. I don’t think I’d be able to wring much fun out of this Wasserboxer tool shed type device.
I bet a few miles trying to keep up with traffic on a two-laner with rain being driven at you by a crosswind, might prove to you that adrenaline is brown. The only reason this scenario popped into my head was that I just returned home from driving in such conditions… just not in a brick-topped Vanagon.
I’d be surprised if that van was intended to do more than reposition itself between nearby venues over the course of this summer. Either that, or whoever is operating it is going to figure that out on the first day they attempt to get it moving any distance at more than 15 or 20mph.
