Here’s a perfect example of someone that could actually use a pickup truck instead of what looks like a semi-long-term setup where he has some kind of home built rack on top of his roof to hold tires…
Rick, I have noticed this too, and it is not limited to Maryland Perhaps this is a design issue with respect to the actual bumper beam beneath the cover not supporting the entire width of the cover? I’ve always chalked it up to Toyota’s mastery of selling cars to the customers most likely to back into stuff.
Looks like a disaster just waiting for the right pothole. This is the kind of jury rigged setup that makes my blood boil. I’m 100% for maximizing small car hauling capabilities but….. This setup disregards common sense regarding vehicle handling and braking dynamics. If I lived by the owner I would personally tell them they need to invest in a hitch, used trailer and cargo net. Unfortunately if the current driver is responsible for all those dents they clearly don’t care about anybody. Now I’ll get off my soapbox.
He should have fastened them on the sides of the car, not the top.

It’s a 90’s rollover protection setup
Did anyone else notice the characteristic Toyota Bumper Cover Crumple Zone™ that was apparently used at least once?
This seems to afflict MANY Toyotas, here in the Baltimore area at least.
I seem to recall a CC on the subject a while back. 😉

Billy’s been trying to sell the Army on his portable basic training field set.

The wooden “rack” doesn’t seem to be secured. I don’t believe it would go very far before the whole thing falls apart.
