CC reader Sally Sublette, who always finds and posts fascinating old ads or newspaper clippings to augment our articles, sent me this old ad that I remember from back in the day. It was a fun challenge for me back in 1961 or so, and it’s probably way to easy for many of you, but enjoy this little slice or two of the past.
“forget the hodge-podge of conflicting advice on when to change oil”
Well, I’m sure glad that doesn’t happen anymore. 🙂
That’s gotta be some paint code on the data plate. 🙂
Snake oil sales will probably continue forever. Sally always posts some great finds!
New Yorkers of a certain age will remember the “Anycar” ads for Manufacturers Hanover, a now-defunct bank:

Those are great! First time I ever heard of these.
Got some Edsel in there twice. Nice!
What’s missing? AMC. Shows the basic prejudice that Rambler faced. Even though it outsold Plymouth in the year of that ad, it still couldn’t get no respect.
No Studebaker, either.
Great find Sally. Somewhere out there is about 10 or 11 cars with great chunks taken out of them.
I have a big collection of old Popular Mechanics and Popular Science mags from the 40’s-50’s and 60’s, dont recall seeing this particular ad though, will keep a lookout for it. Plenty of other gems though, they’re all in storage at the moment
I’ll take the Cadillac at the rear, but not with leaf springs!
I don’t have an old paper ad, but how about this mural ad on historic Lincoln Way in Chelsea, Iowa:
I wonder if this was the inspiration for the Johnny Cash song, ‘One Piece at a Time’.
Considering how those front and rear doors line up, I’d say Johnny’s “two on the left and one on the right” headlights will be the least of his problems. That gap’s too big for any “A-daptor kit” to bridge.
This shows how we take tools like Photoshop for granted. I have a mental picture of an ad guy with scissors and Scotch tape.
Don Draper?
