On our walk last night, we came across this Suburban, and it just begged to be used for a 4th of July post. Is there a more quintessential all-American vehicle? And from a time when they were bit more down-to-earth than the current iteration; a corn-fed, beefy station wagon.
So here’s wishing all you American CC readers, who make up 69.24% of the total CC readership (as per God Google), a happy 4th of July. Perry is on a trip for a few days, and we’ll probably slow down the pace a bit. But we’ve got some all-American cars in store for today, as well as a French one, which is appropriate, seeing how they helped America win its independence. Cheers!
Happy Independence Day from the UK
Happy July 4th its almost the 5th here, but enjoy your celebrations.
Independence Day greetings from London. Apologies for any unpleasantness in the 18th century. And for burning the White House. And for this too…
Thanks for Queen, Pink Floyd, Cream, and Top Gear. I think I can forgive you.
Also Monty Python and Stephen Fry.
….and Tommy Cooper. One of his quotes:
A man takes his Rottweiler to the vet. “My dog is cross-eyed, is there anything you can do for him?”
“Well,” said the vet, “let’s have a look at him”
So he picks the dog up and examines his eyes, then he checks his teeth. Finally, he says, “I’m going to have to put him down.”
“What? Because he’s cross-eyed? ”
“No, because he’s really heavy”
(Google “Tommy Cooper quotes” if you want to have a good laugh)
Happy Independence Day !
You weren’t the only ones…
Happy Independence Day!
Here’s Chrysler’s obvious rip-off of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born In The USA”
Happy Independence day from France.
Which got its own Revolution after Louis the 16th tried to levy new taxes after his kingdom spent a bundle to help americans winning their Revolution.
Unfortunately for him, french people, on par with american folks, were at that time fed up with taxation without representation.
Happy Fourth of July wishes from your Canadian neighbours!
These ‘Burbans sure are nice and I often think of buying one or the basic model of the next generation. Wonder what the owner uses their Chevy/GMC for? Technically the flag is backwards.
Hi Paul,
Enjoy your holiday weekend!
I admit that I don’t know much about the war of indendepence and certainly not about the French involvement. We didn’t study it at school (at least I didn’t), presumably because we lost.
But then, thinking about the Chevy suburban, maybe we didn’t!
Good trucks and definitely emblematic of America at the time. Plenty of room, plenty of power, not fancy but the higher-line ones were well-trimmed. And I think the last of this generation with the (horizontal) quad-lamp grille are the best-looking.
Thanks for the Independence Day wishes from our non-USA readers and a happy Independence Day to fellow Americans!
happy 4th from an american expat living in Ireland….20 some years ago I had a very badly rust eaten 3/4 ton Sub, what a beast, when I bought it the requirements were heavy hauling and cheap, it did the job but I never understood why they were so popular, it seemed to me that depending on what your priorities are either a van or a pickup or a regular station wagon was almost always better.
I knew that number is skewed because I’m an American living in Japan right now, an expat like you! I’ve sadly never owned a Suburban, though. The closest I got was my ’91 Cherokee. Growing up in Toledo, you either have a Jeep in your family or you get run out of town. That may be an exaggeration, but it seems almost everyone I know has a Jeep of some sort somewhere in their family history.
Indeed an appropriate post for Independence Day. Back when a local Chevy dealer moved to a new non-downtown location they put out the call for people to help drive. One of the vehicles I drove was a new (1996) Suburban, and it felt for all the world like a tall Cadillac. It was a summer day, windows down, music turned way up….
My brother has a fairly well-trimmed tan daily driver Suburban that he likes well enough that he bought his older son an ex-government plain bright red one to use for college. I don’t know what happened to that one, but the son went on an extended tour of eastern Europe right after he graduated…not with the red Suburban.
Happy 4th to all our neighbours to the south from British Columbia. You guys are lucky, your national day fell on a Friday this year so you can celebrate for 3 days!
I really appreciate the international readership and contributions to this site. Paul’s international outlook brings in people from around the world.
The ‘Burb is the car the world turns to when it needs a pre ’70s downsize full size car or a vintage Land Rover. I wonder if the U.S. Gov’t will kill the car it thrives on.
When the world needs a “new” vintage Land Rover, it just turns to Land Rover… since they still make the Defender:
Happy holiday weekend to all, and happy vacation to Perry, who is most deserving of it.
Old car lovers really constitute One World – a good thing.
Spotted this one today. Almost the right colors for the week-end – just needs a little of the blue from the one that Paul posted.
