Unfortunately, I didn’t dare shoot the couple as they got out of their clapped-out ZX. It would have reinforced stereotypes even further.
CC Wordless Outtake: Reinforcing Stereotypes

Dude.
Sweet!!
Groovy!
and then?
He should put that antenna in the center of the roof, it would be less directional and take better advantage of the roof as a ground plane.
Some paint would look nice too!
Or maybe wear a hat made of tinfoil.
I was picturing Don and Betty Draper getting out and going inside…
If only a certain van featured here last Friday were parked there…..

Does that say “glass shoppe” or is it a Grass shop”?
Refers to the material of which the smoking devices are made from… I think 😉
May I suggest a fast wagon ? It will swallow 870 kg of Wickit Weedery.
I had a friend in high school named Doug, who I either called Drug Duuuuuuhhhhg since he reinforced stereotypes too. And guess what he drove? Yes! A clapped out ZX.
I can smell if from here.
–Who said weed steals ambition?
I thought the stereotype involved a VW Microbus, not a Z, which I thought was more for the nightclub rake with a gold chain over his bared chest, like the Manta owner in Germany.
The guys that used to drive VW buses are the ones that grow/sell the stuff, and are now driving new Tundras.
Yeah when I think stereotypical ZX driver I thing, gold chains, bare chest and slicked back hair, now of course the ZX wouldn’t be as beat up and the tires would be dripping with Armorall like the owner’s hair.
That’s what he probably looked like in the 80s. Now image thirty years of very hard living, and then you’d know what this guy looked like. Long, thin, pony tail,…and looking rather worse for ware. The woman too. I’m guessing things went a bit downhill for him since he first got the Z.
State park employees on the coast of Mendocino County told me late model Tacomas with or without large quantities of black hose in the back are what Pot growers there use.
I think of that type of person’s drugs of choice as alcohol or cocaine, not marijuana.
Like this?
I would have expected a clapped out Chevyvan or Econoline.
I can almost smell the reefer reeking wrecklessly through every pore of this wretched looking wreck. I really don`t need a “contact high” right now. BTW, is it legal to smoke dope while you drive?
So the stereotype is rough looking vehicles are driven by Stoners?
A former housemate of mine who is a Stoner drove an 03 Outback, had a Snowboard rack on the roof, some Snowboard stickers, and was mostly a stereotypical stoner. Dude has run ins with the law whenever he enters Idaho since not only does he and the car fit stereotypes, but the car also has Oregon plates.
Back in the 70s and still today, a sporty car like a ZX or a Vette or a TransAm was firmly associated with Bud Light, not lighted bud. The bud users formerly drove hippiemobiles, but more recently any old cheap beater. A Ford Tempo or a ’79 Olds would probably be the ideal budmobile now.
Former Governor John Kitzhaber will be there shortly.
Aha! I was wondering how long it would be. Thanks for the heads up.
Oh ha!
I don’t really get it. Aside from the grass shop (it’s becoming legal in more and more places) the car is just a worn out beat up ZX of late ’70s vintage. A totally unremarkable car to me. I consider the original Z cars through ’77 to be highly desirable, but the ZX has no value to me other than it being a 2 door. I’ve never heard of any connection between weed smokers and ZXs. The stereotypical car for such a person would be a VW bus or bug, or in later years maybe a ’70s Chevy van. I did have one moron ask me if I smoked the stuff (I don’t) because I was driving my Pinto wagon with a peace sign on the back window.
I have always liked the Datsun 280ZX, but this is the worst I’ve ever seen the car.
Jason ;
Just go to any trailer park or other meth head area and you’ll see plenty of these in far worse shape .

Stupid question time :
What does a big green cross on a ” Medical ” building mean anyway ? they’re all over So. Cal. and I wonder if they’re weed shops or what ? .
TIA ,
-Nate
Yes.
Thanx Paul ;
I figured as much .
We had a lot of “medical dispensaries ” (wink.,wink, nudge nudge , knowhutimean ?) but they began to get robbed and shot up a lot so the leaf pictures and GIANT letters proclaiming MARIJUANA HERE ! all came down .
It’s kind of funny , you can figure out the stoners by their responses here .
-Nate
Medicinal marijuana? Edit: Thanks Paul. Question: is a certain level of cannabis in the bloodstream considered DUI as it is with alcohol?
Yes as part of legalizing recreational use in WA they set a blood limit to be considered DUI. Before that there was no legal definition of a blood level content that was considered impaired. Not sure what that level is off the top of my head but there was some controversy over it since they had no science to back it up. Not sure about the other states that have legalized it which no includes OR.
Thanks. Drug-testing is making big inroads here in oz, but the authorities cannot/will not set a level determining impairment. Because recreational marijuana is still not legal over here, any level is considered an offence.
Was decriminalized in Tassie while I lived there way back no testing in those days either. Victoria was trying roadside testing but their test is deeply flawed.
It is actually a Tobacco Pipe not Bong, at least where I grew up in New York since Mary Jane is not legal there.
Problem with police wanting to check you for driving while Stoned is it is a blood test. Now being forced to take a Breathalyzer test when wrongly accused is one thing, but a blood test is a whole ‘nother can of worms.
I don’t know about other states where it is legal, but about a year ago here in AZ (where it is available legally for medical purposes) a guy that had been in CO about a month before and smoked it legally, was arrested, charged, and convicted because they found minute traces of a THC metabolite in his blood. His attorney had a couple of doctors that stated what they had found couldn’t possibly cause impairment in any way. But the prosecutor was very anti pot, and apparently so was most of the jury.
Those goddamn old people ! they ~ oh wait .
nevermind =8-) .

And by glass shop they do not mean that they will fix your window, they mean they sell bongs.
My thought wasn’t so much the car as the condition. IOW, I have better things to do than to polish my car or even pay someone to polish it. And as long as it runs I don’t have to put any money in it other than for gas.
In my area I would expect stoners to drive old Buick or Chevy sedans.
Wickit Bondo.
dont be mean i watched my name is earl and people used to to take the piss out of my old Volvo 240.Not everyone can afford a Cadillac or blow their money on some none descript blob from Toyota
Do the owners wash it with bong water?
Kudos to the owners of this car. No matter how rough it looks, and, no matter how rough the owners look,it is still being driven. I cannot imagine sitting in it but nonetheless, how many other ZXs are still functioning as someones transportation. I also need to wonder, what would the reaction have been had the car been parked in front of a liquor store?
I thought that maybe Joe Dirt dumped his Charger for a Z-car.
Should have saved this for April 20th
I was stuck in traffic a few hours ago outside a local dispensary. A nice late-model BMW of the 2 wheeled variety had just pulled up, and a well-dressed older man was pulling off his helmet and walking toward the entrance. Then he walked right by and went into the computer repair shop next door. That was just a few blocks from where I saw a Trabant today (totally off-topic, but I just had to share it! I’m in the US so that’s not an every day sight).
They should be restoring their car instead of smoking weed. Do something productive with their lives.
Someone should be doing X instead of complaining on the Internet. Do something productive with their lives.
Nailed it.
In 1985 I spent a weekend in the clink, and met a pretty cool dude with the surname ‘Flowers’. Can’t recall his first name, we just called him Flowers. It seems Flowers was waiting to be transferred to Jackson (Michigan State Prison) on a drug charge. He told me how his car, a sweet ’75 240Z, was at his old lady’s and he needed to get it out of there because she was sure to sell it before he got paroled.
He offered me $200 to drive it from the Lansing area to Grand Rapids, drop it off at his mom’s place. $200 was a lot of money to me, and I probably would have done it for nothing had he asked, but the Western Union wire was waiting for me when I got out. I picked up the car and delivered it (my wife following), no fuss no muss. It wasn’t until after I got home that I really began to realize how stupid that was of me; who knows what might have been hidden in that thing!
I wish I could set up a chain of convenience stores, stocked to the ceiling with snack foods, and located right next to these marijuana dispensaries.
Just buy a Plaid Pantry. Some even stock Gold or Silver Spray paint and bags of socks. Or plastic cups, Ping Pong Balls, and crappy booze.
Don’t forget model airplane glue, computer duster and some really strong car air fresheners.
Far out. I have a bar friend who smokes daily. He has a bad back as an excuse. I’ve never been into it, but the smell of weed on somebody’s clothing is wonderful to me.
Wow Ken, your friend must’ve had a RARE car… A 75 240z?
Funny, since the 240z was extinct by 1975… Maybe a 75 280z, it’s premiere year. Lol
Who knows… long time ago. Coulda been a ’58 Z28.
The Datsun 280ZX is among one of my favorite vehicles built during the late 70’s/early 80’s time frame, it’s a shame this particular Z car isn’t in that good of shape, I’ve always considered the Datsun 280ZX’s to be the last great era of the Z cars before they became the Nissan Z car which I was never really too fond of.
Just as you thought you had the stereotypes all down, you get thrown a curveball. Often, you’re right, but sometimes, you’re not. I learned this back when I worked at a bank as a teller.
A well-dressed lady who walked in from her new Audi barely kept a few hundred dollars in her account, whereas a guy in paint-stained t-shirt and jeans that walked in from his well-worn, twenty-year-old F150 had almost 150k in his.
This is a bit of an anecdote, but it goes to show how incorrect stereotypes can be. I’m a systems engineer by trade and always had a passion for technology, partucularly computers. Because of that, everyone around me (coworkers to family members) assumes that I must like video games (because people who are “techno-nerds” like video games, right?).
That is so far from the truth. I haven’t picked up a video game at all in my life, and I don’t even know of the biggest titles out there. I also like country music versus pop, have conservative versus liberal views, prefer rural towns versus bustling cities like those of Silicon Valley, for example–all the exact opposite of your average “techno-nerd”.
…”whereas a guy in paint-stained t-shirt and jeans that walked in from his well-worn, twenty-year-old F150 had almost 150k in his”…
I know that kind of people. Mostly guys with huge hands, no neck and often they are as tall as they are wide. They have absolutely zero interest in the way they look or are dressed. But they do own real estate, land, money and have no debts.
Furthermore, these folks often invest in long lasting (business) relations -decades, not years or months- and are very loyal and trustworthy. “A man of his word” is the right expression. No motor mouths either.
My long lost twin!
I own an Audi A6, an old LeSabre, and a 1987 Chevy truck. I’m in IT, but am that guy that isn’t concerned about appearance- especially with vehicles.
I’m laid back, enjoy farming, and have a picture of an Oliver tractor in my office. I’m not the stereotypical tech guy.
One thing on vehicles, though- I prefer older, plain vehicles for moving stuff. If I’m hauling a lot of valuable computers, a 2010 Audi A6 Avant will attract way more attention than a 15 year old white E350 cargo van.
I don’t think that the Z quite fits into my example, though. 😉
Jesse Pinkmans next car? (if he shows in “Better call Saul”)
Is this stuff legal in Oregon, and if so is it medically prescribed?
Of course, just looking at cars like this ZX is our high……..
For now, one needs a medical card, not to hard to get. As of July 1, it’s completely legal; Oregon has joined Washington and Colorado to legalize recreational cannabis.
You know, as a daily CC reader and partaker, I really don’t appreciate the stereotype reinforcement. Not your garden variety partaker here. In fact, I balance a full time job with a near-full time course load.
By its very nature, reinforcing stereotypes is an exercise in futility, and this post is meant to be taken light-heartedly. It’s a visual joke, so to speak. No harm intended.
Well, you certainly earned your forum name…
Or am I reinforcing a stereotype… indulge me? Lighten up.
Yeah I noticed the stereotype sniping. I put it down to sour grapes from uptight midwesterners who aren’t lucky enough to live on the Best Coast where weed is legal. Enjoying some Sour Tsunami and bourbon now.
That car screams UNDERCOVER
A quick paint job at Maaco, and she’ll a class at the next Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Lol
Those rear louvers are pure 80’s car porn. lol
