I’ve noticed this house not far from mine for years; there were always at least two or three interesting cars in the driveway. But the other day, there were no less than six, all of them worthy of at least a few minutes of fame on CC. Since the far two might be a bit hard to make out, I’ll give you another angle:
Is there any pattern here? I’m not.
The owner certainly has no brand loyalty.
The Volvo and Honda are the only ones you really see on the road in significant numbers anymore.
It’s been quite some time since I’ve seen a Honda like that on the roads of NE Illinois. The tin worm got most of then a long time ago. The Volvo is far more common.
I’d love to know what’s in the garages.
Id take that fox(called jetta here) I dont what it was called south of thr border.
That’s a straight up MKI Jetta. There were two Foxes sold in the US. One was the US market 1st generation Audi 80, and the other was a small VW from Brazil based on the VW Gol(not a typo, but it should be). The Jetta above was just a Golf/Rabbit MK1 with a trunk and quad headlights.
Isn’t that an 80-84 Jetta?
I suspect there were multiple people living/visiting there. Given most of the cars’ ages and the fact that none of them are terribly expensive, me thinks they were purchased randomly. The Euro Van is the only vehicle that looks to be particularly peculiar since the rest were fairly popular at one point or another. Maybe even younger people with modest incomes buying off of Craigslist or something…
Now what would be interesting is finding a household with eclectic cars where they have big money invested. Like wife drives a BMW man drives a truck or something.
“wife drives a BMW man drives a truck” is not all that eclectic here in the well to do burbs of Southeastern PA. It describes many driveways around here; just not mine. The truck is always a 4 door and 4WD, less than 2 years old, and never used for anything other than driving to work (CPA or financial analyst). The guy also has an Audi A6 or a Porsche Boxster in the garage. The wife’s BMW may be substituted with an Acura or Lexus SUV if they are afraid of the two snow storms that we get in a year. American trucks are ok in these driveways as long as they are new. No American cars are permitted.
House next door with the Mini and the Veloster is pretty dang interesting too.
Thing that jumps at me is the green grass. Man, I miss that.
Word.
So did I when I went to college in Des Moines, Iowa….
It looks like formerly popular American, Japanese, and European cars are all represented here.
Whats missing?
Something British?
I cant find any pattern here, FWD. RWD. Swedish, Japan, US, German…..
Something Italian and Korean, too.
Cheap would be the generic term all look to be near end of life vehicles just drive em till they stop.
Somehow, I don’t think that’s the likely scenario here. Man, you sure are hard on anything other than your Peugeot and Hillman. Or are there other cars that are ok with you?
Yes Paul those are all good seviceable cars of little value here anyway The Honda will run for ages some of the others not so much That was the only common theme. That Mitsi has a factory wing so may have been a performance edition once but nothing else really stands out, How many move regularly?Or is it like the house opposite me full of students with similar aged and valued vehicles including a taurus
Is the Galant in front of the Volvo (I assume it’s a Galant) one of the AWD 4 wheel steering turbo versions? I worked with a guy who had one when they were still sold new.
That’s the Galant GS-R. My cousin had a 1991 model in the late 1990s when we were both in high school. 135 hp 2.0 liter four – basically the DSM engine sans turbo – that revved like a chainsaw to 7,000 rpms and made nice noises while doing so. It also had an electronically adjustable sport suspension that surprisingly never gave any trouble.
He dumped that thing while in college and now shares a RAV4 with his wife.
I think the one dman is talking about is the Galant VR4, not the GSR.
Around here one sees an occasional house like that with six or seven older nondescript cars parked everywhere there’s room. One imagines a Korean extended family who all work at the family-owned 7-11 competitor, and wonders if they’ll keep up the austere lifestyle until they’ve saved up some money to move out and upscale.
That was one of my first impressions, (1) an extended immigrant family as you described, (2) college crash pad, (3) a pre-yuppie enclave of young’uns saddles with college debt, (4) party goin’ on.
If it were pickups, vans, and other work trucks, Itinerant Mexican construction workers. We get a lot of that around here. Health dept. busted one landlord. He had a 3 bedroom house packed with bunkbeds, even in the garage. He had 20 guys living there, each paying 500 a month. The front and back yard looked like a used truck lot. But I digress.
If you looked up “second stereotypical Eugene driveway” in the dictionary…
Whatever THAT means…
I’ll take the Civic tall wagon, please.
Mitsubishi Galant VR4(front bumper removed, probably to change the intercooler)
VW Eurovan
VW Jetta coupe
Honda Civic Wagon
Volvo 850 wagon
Chevy Nova coupe
Likes old school cars, just like me… I have 8 🙂
