Here’s an old photo I found of one of the 356 parts cars my dad had in the ’70s. Most of them were rustbuckets and didn’t run, but they kept his 356B Roadster running great.
Here’s another photo of Dad’s green ’60 Roadster and the gray ’60 or ’61 parts car, circa 1973. This picture was taken in the alley behind my Mom’s parents’ house. They were very tolerant of Dad’s hobby and let him keep the parts car there. He still has one today, but not this one. We’ll be hearing about that car and its seven-year restoration some other time.
Interesting you should post this, as I just read that Ferdinand Alexander Porsche died (age 76)…
1973’s parts car would be today’s big bucks primo restoration candidate.
I was thinking the very same thing. The top is even largely intact.
Thinking it over, it is surprising that no carmaker ever put a small sink under the hood so that you can scrub up a bit before you close the hood. Hot running water would be no problem (unless it’s a VW or Porsche – but the hand dryer would be great). Or maybe just a Goop or GoJo dispenser?
My dad always used a dollop of clean motor oil to get the heavy grease off before he went inside… dispensed in volume from the tailpipe of our Vega!
As I related before my ’63 VW did actually have a handy cold water faucet on the dashboard, thanks to freeze-breaking the air-pressurized windshield washer valve.
