It only seems like yesterday, when one might still see an old beater ’64 GTO along with some other junk. Cohort Contributor ggh06 says that this was shot in Johnstown, PA in 1995, on Kodacolor. No more…
He’s also got another nice shot of beaters:
Yes We’re Open.
And the early 3rd gen Trans Am appears to be in excellent shape! No more indeed.
Speaking of that, there’s a rust-free, late-model 3rd gen Camaro in the same red for under 5k in the same condition as the TA in the top photo.
I love me some 3rd gen TA!
That one there looks similar to mine, but mine was gray. It was a WS-6, but a carbureted 305 + 5 speed. Go figure…
And the only thing the ’65 Fairlane needs is some air shocks in the back and a new coat of paint rolled on and she’s good to go! 🙂
Interesting (but not suprising) to see what appears to be an ’81 Escort in ‘junk’ shape . . . 14 years of use at that time may have been more than average . . . the ’86-’88 Celebrity was a common sight in Ohio/Pa/Mich/NY/Ontario as, at that time, I was stationed in Cleveland (from ’97 to ’02). I had two Celebrities – both wagons – one an ’88 with the 2.8 and the other a ’90 with the 3.1 – both were outstanding vehicles. Most of these FWD “A” bodies were runners that I saw in this section of the rust belt . . . and they all were in a variety of conditions from very cherry to swiss cheese . . .
To see a restoreable “real” GTO in PA (much less even in California during that time) certainly was a rarity . . .
Nowadays, video stores are rarer than 60s Fairlanes.
Judging by the black-on-yellow lettering and the lack of windows on the building, I’m pretty sure that’s the one kind of video store that IS still open…assuming your local zoning/decency laws will allow it.
Bingo!
Wrong! there is still a local video store in WAAAAY better shape than this one, still has all the windows, looks clean and safe, and always has some cars at it. FYI: The name of the place is “Family Video”
1st gen Escorts and Chevy Celebrities are near extinct here in IL. Even ’97 design Scorts are fading away. Rust never sleeps.
And, now, it’s a near crime to have a 64 GTO parked outside in that condition!
I have some pictures of mid sixties GTO, fairly clean. If i ever solve the flicker upload interface. I will upload them.
One question is which years had horizontal headlights? Was it just the 64s?
I have uploaded the pictures of the GTO to Flicker.
That’s not your usual video store. If I recognize it correctly, that’s an adult video emporium out on US30 near the US219 interchange, south of Johnstown. You don’t build those kind of place in Johnstown . . . . . the locals tend to torch them, and the police investigations afterwards are always inconsequential. Back in the 80’s and 90’s there more more than a couple of them in the area, all built on the incredibly cheap (1/8″ plywood for the walls in the viewing booths).
Can’t place the first picture as exactly, but it appears to be from around the same area.
There’s a very good chance that that Escort was still being used at the time the picture was taken (Pennsylvania only uses rear license plates). I’ve certainly seen worse cars than that running around town – as recently as four weeks ago.
I’m thinking thats an adult video store…
It’s funny to see the Celebrity in that shape, one step away from scrap, and still being able to buy one NEW (well, the Ciera/Century) in 1995!
(I guess it’s what seeing a clapped-out ’92+ Panther or ’98+ Ranger was like until they stopped making them a few months ago. Or a clapped-out Mercedes G-Class to this day, though they never get to that condition…)
Cars have come a long way since the mid 90’s. A 10-15 year old car now is not even considered a beater.
photo?
Walter, are you trying to upload directly from flickr? You need to save the flickr picture to your PC first, then upload it from your PC to CC.
No I have tried, and failed to upload from my computer to the comment page. I did manage to upload to flicker, so check them out there.
