The creepy cousin metaphor notwithstanding, this really is a gorgeous BMW. I wish they still had something remotely as alluring in today’s lineup.
BMW no longer makes alluring antiques, but I think this is pretty special:

The more recent Z8 is more or less a modern interpretation of the 507, but they’re pretty hard to come by (I used to see one around Pasadena now and then, even parked at Trader Joe’s!), and run around $100K for a good one…if I’m not mistaken they’ve been out of production for a while now.
An absolute classis. I remember reading and re-reading this about a 100 times, dreaming about a car which was like something out of a fantasy tale. If I had the cash, it would be this rather than the almost vulgar 300SL roadster.
A lovely car, and BMW’s finest convertible design. (Finest overall for me would be the E9 coupes).
The 507 was hugely expensive in the UK and consequently very rare. The BMW brand didn’t have much “street-cred” in those days. I remember reading that car and motorcycle racer John Surtees was given one for winning one of his World Championships.
