[ED: Yesterday’s ’64 Thunderbird CC just screams for this What If follow-up. Dad! Time to trade in the Fairlane for a wagon! There’s a nice new mid-sized version at the Ford dealer!]
1964 Thunderbird Squire—Taking one of my favorite Thunderbirds, the “Squarebird” of 1964-66, and making it into a classic 1960s Country Squire, was one of my more fun chops in the “early days.” I first had to make it into a four-door, predating the actual 4-door T-bird by three years, and posted a sedan version online first. Then I went further adding the wagon bodystyle and then the “wood” paneling. I would love to see someone build this today for the car show circuit! The rear trunk on these ‘Birds was low enough that the rear bumper/taillight assembly could be kept and a hatch added above it. Cutting the hatch into the roof, a la the Dodge Magnum, would be fine for ease of loading.
I absolutely love the Sedan you did too! With your eye Thunderbird could have been a brand unto itself.
During this time the T-Bird shared some tooling with the Lincoln Continental, so actually building this should be within the realm of possibility.
Love. Want. Need now.
Incredibly plausible! I can see it with skis on top. Great Photoshopping. How do I learn how to do that?
And yes Laurence, T-Bird should have been its own brand with its own dealers instead of Edsel. “Ford is the mainstream brand, Thunderbird means performance and personal luxury, Mercury is mid-range and Lincoln is luxury.”
Holy Mackerel! That is one gorgeous rendering. What if? indeed! I’d desire one of those if they ever existed, as that has to be one of the most beautiful wagons I have ever seen.
Every soccer mom would had to have one.
This works quite nicely. I wouldn’t mind seeing this with the Galaxie’s circular lights.
Sexiest paneling ever.
You made the un-sexy sexy, that’s difficult.
Sorry guys, for me, Thunderbird was a waste between 58 and 82.
Absolutely incredible job, Casey. You had me going for a moment when I saw it.
If Ford had gone there they could have put Mercury outta its misery by 1970.
Very nicely done and amazingly iconic. One small detail: If the rear-door window were pulled farther back that would give the greenhouse a more balanced look.
I think that would actually be a concept that would fit the 58 style as well.
I Love This Car. Theres The Medium Turquiose I keep refering to as Aqua, looked great with aqua and white interior.
I Never realized until today that The Front End of The 66 TBird & Much of the rest….
was mimicked if not imitated when the Jaguar Coupe 1975 on, morphed into a convertible model that was available i believe until the xk8 replaced it
These vehicles stand out on their beauty, creative style and substance. There is no SUV that can hold a candle to the American station wagon!
My father had a Ford dealership through the 60s early 70s and always drove T Birds switching them every 3-6 months so that Bird bug got deep into. My DNA I have owned several myself favorite(if there is such a thing) was my 65 it was my first car my mother had a Country Squire the same color that you have chosen here, it was in that car that I first got laid. So you can see this pic brings up great memories……nice work
Beautiful rendering! I’d love to see someone do a real one
Although, 1964-66 were Flair-birds. Square-birds were 1958-60.
