You know, I kind of like it. Looks like the nose was run into a pencil sharpener, but overall it seems a tough, practical little truck. Certainly fun to take through a nice muddy field, if the picture’s any indication.
If Daewoo wasn’t in such a bad financial state, this would have been launched here in the states if I recall correctly. Would have been way nicer than the first gen Sportage. I remember seeing one on display at the Chicago Auto Show around 02 or 03???
This is the 1996-2006 Korando generation. A budget trailer tower, that’s the best way to describe it. SUVs that got a panel van conversion (like this one) are rarely bought for their off-road capabilities. It’s the towing capacity that matters most. And believe it or not, this Korando may tow a 3,500 kg (7,700 lbs) trailer.
The transmission and transfer case come from Borg Warner, axles from Dana. Under the hood a license built Mercedes-Benz engine. Most common here was the 2.9 liter inline-5 diesel with a turbocharger.
It says “Trees & Biomass” on the door, so you know in what line of business it’s working. The driver was operating a forestry machine.
God Almighty that thing is ugly. Looks like a Jeep Liberty that some high school shop kids were charged with rebuilding after a “totaled out” accident.
The Korando, Musso and Rexton were quite popular back then. As I said above, budget trailer towers with a license built Benz diesel. There was certainly a market for them here, but so far I have yet to see their newer SUVs.

It was intended to look like that?
Call Ken Greenley. That’s Professor Ken Greenley, for friends. He designed it.
Even the best studios have duds. Remember the Volvo Bertone from the late ’70s?
Wasn’t that one built by Bertone rather than designed by him?
That little thing must buck like a pbr bull with that 40 inch wheelbase!
Saw quite a few of these when I was in South Korea last summer. They are great looking in comparison to the pre-facelift Actyon SUV or Musso Sports.
They did liven up the automotive landscape when I was over there though. Much more interesting than all the KIAs and Hyundais driving everywhere.
Looks like a Chinese knockoff of a Wrangler, one that happens to be squinting.
That having been said I’ve heard these are capable little machines, if aesthetically challenged.
The Actyon, on the other hand, just has to be Korea’s equivalent of the Aztek.
Theres a race series for Actyon utes its entertaining to watch as they dont handle all that well.
this is ugly compared to some of the alien transportation coming out of japan today??
We got these here in Australia, but as with all SsangYongs you don’t see many.
