Curbside Review: 2021 GMC Canyon 4WD AT4 Crew Cab – The Strong, Silent Type

The engine in this case is GM’s 3.6liter Direct-Injected DOHC V6 with Variable Valve Timing and it produces 308HP@6,800rpm and 275lb-ft of torque at 4,000rpm.  It’s mated to an 8-speed automatic in this trim level and I found it to be a very likable combination.

While the peak power ratings seem to be on the higher side of the tach, I rarely ventured that far and never felt it was lacking for power in the rev range.  The truck had that very likeable feeling of being a solid assembly with a torquey motor pushing it along, it felt like a big hand was physically pushing a toy car or something.

It’s hard to describe but something I commonly find in V6 powered smaller trucks.  While there is a 2.5liter 4cylinder available it is limited to RWD models, however there is also a 2.8liter Duramax 4cylinder TurboDiesel available.  The TurboDiesel is available in this AT4 trim level but adds around $4,500 to the price and downgrades the transmission to a 6-speed.

Around town it performs strongly and fairly silently with just enough noise to let you know you’re in a truck and that it’s working for you.  On the freeway it cruises happily at 80mph and will go faster with a downshift or two but the blunt shape makes itself known as well as it doesn’t just rocket off into the distance.  Still, it doesn’t complain at being worked and makes for a good companion on any journey.

I’ve long been a lover of All-Terrain tires and compliant suspensions and this truck delivers.  With the 31″ diameter Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs (265/65-17 actual dimensions) there’s a healthy amount of tread and 65% of that again in sidewall, making pavement irregularities and driveway entrances just disappear underneath.  The tread pattern does make itself heard when driving but not obnoxiously so.  Bumps are certainly felt through the off road suspension package but there’s little head toss and nothing seems at all untoward.

Actually venturing off paved roads along an in areas heavily pot-holed dirt road resulted in more shaking and bouncing, but the structure felt fairly solid and remained perfectly controllable.  Traction in 4WD was excellent and there seems to be enough ground clearance along with underbody protection to be able to get pretty far without being overly concerned about damaging something vital.

I drove the Canyon a total of 337 miles and it returned an average of 19mpg for me.  That’s exactly what the EPA says it should return on average with a city rating of 17 and a highway rating of 24.  So to duplicate that you’d need to do as I did, which means you’d drive down and do kind of a loop of Denver with a few stops encompassing a total of 192 miles with about 80% of that on the freeway, then approximately 100 miles around town with some short freeway jaunts such as the driving all of us do most weekend days.

Follow that up with about 25 miles on unpaved roads with lots of stops to look at nature and take some photos, often while leaving the truck idling for a few minutes at a time and then another twenty or so miles in total just cruising along a scenic section of highway near a lake.  This trim level of course does nothing to aid fuel economy with the purposely removed front air dam, larger tires, and leveling kit that raises the front, all of which directly harm that aspect.

Built in Wentzville, Missouri alongside its Chevy sister model, this truck claims 60% US/Canadian content.  21% hails from Mexico and the balance of 19% from who knows where.  The engine and transmission are from the United States though, that’s for sure.

So now you (perhaps) want your own, but what’ll it cost?  Well, GMC’s website will regale you with a plethora of choices but as to how this particular one was equipped, here goes:  The base price for the CrewCab Short Bed 4WD AT4 trim level of the 2021 GMC Canyon runs exactly $40,000 plus the $1,195 Destination Charge.

That includes the 2-speed electronic transfer case with autotrac, auto-locking rear diff, cruise control, transfer case shield, and hill descent control.  The remote keyless entry, remote start, wireless device charging (for small devices), leather power seats with lumbar, auto HVAC, soft touch dashboard, heated leather-wrapped wheel with tilt/telescope, rear defroster, rear folding bench seat, and power windows/locks.

Additionally included in the standard configuration are the Duratrac tires (notably the spare though is of a different line, it is not a Duratrac but rather a Goodyear Wrangler Territory as I recall), projector headlamps with LED signature, LED fog lamps, power heated mirrors, the cornerstep rear bumper, EZ lift and lower tailgate and red front recovery hooks, stabilitrak stability and traction control, rear park assist, HD rear vision camera, and teen driver programming as well.

Optional are to start a biggie, the AT4 Off-Road Performance Edition Package for $3,195, which includes the 17″ Gloss Black Aluminum Wheels, Spray-On Bedliner, Off-Road Rocker Protection, Suspension Leveling Kit, All-Weather Floor Liners, Black AT4 Badges, Black Exhaust Tip, as well as Front and Mid Skid Plates.  I kind of think that one could pick and choose their own items here and save quite a bit of money.  The tires are the same, so it really costs GMC practically nothing to swap out one set of 17″ wheels for another.

I don’t really see $3,175 of value in this stuff – it’s all nice to have but some of the items are available separately such as the Spray-In Bedliner for $475, Black Rocker Guards for another $500, Floor Mats for $170.  How much can a couple of skid plates and the various little black knock knacks cost?  I think I could find solutions for under the extra $2,000 that’s left over but of course that then wouldn’t be financeable as part of the deal unless perhaps the dealer has some items for sale.

In any case there was also the GMC Infotainment System with Navigation for $995 that adds Nav to the screen setup (the 8″ size is already the standard size), this also adds the AndroidAuto to the system whereas Apple CarPlay is standard. On top of that it also includes the Bose Premium Audio System as part of the package.  The last option is the Driver Alert Package which includes Lane Departure Warning and Forward Collision Alert.

Note that there is no Blind Spot Alert System or some of the other electronic safety features on a truck that starts at $40k, which I find unfortunate.  In any case the grand total here came to $44,585, which seems like a heady sum for a mid-size truck but isn’t really an outlier anymore, especially for a non-basic truck that has some off-road chops.

I completely understand that the pricing levels of the midsizers push a lot of people to full size trucks, however there is something about this size that really is very useful, especially with the longer bed option.  Or more likely it’s not even needed for most if the main focus is transportation and recreational fun instead of needing to tow or haul large items most of the time.  While there now appears to be a market for an even smaller size option, today’s midsizers really seem a bit of a Goldilocks for many people.

I don’t begrudge people their larger trucks, especially if they need more rear seat room for families but for those that don’t and use trucks as mainly transportation while having an occasional need for a bed, this GMC Canyon is very compelling.  The size is very handy, it’s not cumbersome to drive or park in most places, at 212.4″ long it fits in garages, isn’t overly tall, has the requisite look, in this case looks a bit larger than it actually is, is available in various bed and cab and powertrain configurations and returns decent if not stellar economy.

All the while going about its mission without complaint but with competence and inspiring confidence.  And lastly, while it isn’t the top seller for whatever reason, that also means a little point of differentiation relative to the hordes of lookalikes out there, in and of itself a reason to perhaps take a look.  After all, who wants to be exactly like everyone else?
