Jerry Seinfeld loves cars. Jerry Seinfeld loves comedy. Jerry Seinfeld loves coffee. As a lover of all three myself, I love Jerry’s web TV series, “Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee“. Especially the cars. I’ve never seen such delicious photography of classic cars. Whether you care about comedians or not, you’ll love the CCs that open each episode. Just the thing for a Sunday. So let’s go get some coffee.
Each episode has a simple format, starting with the Car. Jerry starts it up and introduces the car, explaining its historical significance and what’s special about it. Then we go for a short drive in the car, pick up the guest comedian, and they chat on their way to the coffee shop. I like how we see and hear what it’s really like in the car on the road. They go in for coffee, bat around some jokes and talk about comedy and comedians. The whole thing is casual and unscripted. Sometimes it’s great, other times it’s yada, yada, yada.
Here at the Curbside, it’s safe to say we care about the Cars First, and the comedians second. So here are all three seasons of cars, with the guests they picked up so you can find the episode:
- 1952 Volkswagen Beetle: Larry David
- 1967 Austin-Healey 3000: Ricky Gervais
- 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A: Brian Regan
- 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL: Alec Baldwin
- 1963 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: Joel Hodgson
- 1970 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3: Bob Einstein
- 1966 Porsche 356 SC Cabriolet: Barry Marder
- 1976 Triumph TR6: Colin Quinn & Mario Joyner
- 1960 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud II: Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks
- 1962 Volkswagen Kombi Pickup: Michael Richards
- 1969 Jaguar E-Type Series 2: Sarah Silverman
- 1995 Volvo 960: David Letterman
- 1950 Citroen 2CV: Gad Elmaleh
- 1958 Cadillac Eldorado: Don Rickles
- 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS: Seth Meyers
- 1969 Lamborghini Miura P400S: Chris Rock
- 1959 Fiat 600 Jolly: Louis C.K.
- 1981 DeLorean DMC-12: Patton Oswalt
- 1949 Porsche 356/2: Jay Leno
- 1966 MGB: Todd Barry
- 1967 Volvo 1800S: Tina Fey
- 1976 AMC Pacer: Jason Alexander
- 1969 Pontiac GTO: Howard Stern
We all saw Jerry with Jason Alexander at Super Bowl halftime this year, but did you see what he picked him up in? Naturally, the George Costanza of cars. See the long version at CCC.
Watch a very wealthy man do a very tight K turn in a very long Rolls Royce Silver Cloud II. Seriously, Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks are priceless in this bit.
The occasional Acura product placement is welcome on CCC. Jerry picked up Jay Leno in a 100% original handmade Porsche 356/2. They happened to park next to the new NSX.
Ricky Gervais in a proper British roadster, the Austin-Healey 3000. He’s properly terrified.
A 1958 Cadillac Eldorado, the Don Rickles of cars.
Louis C.K. gets Jolly.
Something special for Michael Richards, a 1962 split-window double-cab VW pickup bus. Interior in grey vinyl and duct tape.
What’s cooler than Chris Rock? Chris Rock in a Lamborghini Miura.
Here’s one for you, Tom: the Volvo 960 wagon that IndyCar team owner Dave Letterman got from Paul Newman. It’s not your usual suburban hauler.
Two French comedians: Gad Elmaleh and a 2CV.
Once in awhile the car doesn’t run quite so well. Patton Oswalt learns a DeLorean won’t always go 88 mph. It’s great to see these stars deal with a good old-fashioned breakdown.
Finally, what’s more Howard Stern than a screaming orange 1969 Pontiac GTO? Here come the Judge!
You’ll find these cars and a lot more at Comedians and Cars Getting Coffee. Enjoy!
I must say I enjoy this series. The Letterman Volvo is a blast and he gets pulled over by the cops in the Miura. This is the sort of thing you do once you’ve made your FU money. Kudos to the man.
The Louis CK episode is worth it just for his crazy story.
That boat story is classic. LCK toured oz recently. Did some small venue gigs on the quiet. I missed them. D’oh.
I want to watch this, yet somehow, I don’t…..is it Seinfeld? Sometimes I find him funny, other times I want to hit him in the face with a cinder block, is it me?
You get to see some nice cars on the road. It’s not really funny-funny, but some of the conversations work. He knew Alec Baldwin as a yungun, so they have a good reminisce. Michael Richards is totally shell-shocked and contrite after his club run-in.
That’s why I put Cars First in my post. Jerry Seinfeld’s not for everyone. (But then who is?) The Nineties self-involved snarkyness we saw in his sitcom character can get irritating. Try an episode or two – you’ll find the car is the star at the start, Jerry is sincere and well-informed about the cars, and you can stop watching when the guest shows up if you like.
The way these cars are photographed and described is extra special, that’s my point to the CC community. Enjoy.
His guests aren’t for everyone, either—although I generally enjoy the show, I couldn’t stand the Gervais episode (partly because I’m just tired of Gervais, but compounded by the fact that he couldn’t stop complaining about the Healey—if it broke down during the shoot I could understand, but complaining about its interior design, size and lack of airbags completely misses the point).
That said, Jerry’s taste in old cars largely parallels mind, and he usually does a superb job of pairing up car and comedian).
Yes “Carmine”, it’s you.
We all want to hit you in the face with a cinder block, too. Either this or run you over with a 1974 Cadillac Fleetwood Talisman.
When I figure out which, I’ll let you know.
I’m so funny. JS should pick ME up in a classic car!!
I don’t want to hit Carmine with a cinder block. I never liked Seinfeld as a TV show, but CICGC is laid back – he’s not trying so hard.
I’m more of a Simpson’s kind of guy. Thanks for the posting Seymour.
Touchy, touchy little lady, are you on Sienfelds payroll? If not, then what the f**k do you care if I like him or not, even the easter bunny has enemies…..
ALL of you?
What did you do? Rent a friend? Did you mom get paroled? Or is there a mouse in your pocket?
When you figure it out, come on down, I’ll be ready, come and take your best shot, the first one better be a good one.
Perhaps your lack of a sense of humor is why you don’t like Seinfeld.
I thought “Carmine” knew I was trying to be funny…???
Maybe he didn’t get it?
I knew you were trying to be funny, and even if someone didn’t think you WERE funny, it was obvious you weren’t trying to be threatening. I enjoy Carmine’s comments on CC, as I think most everyone does, but I just can’t stand bullying. No need for his overreaction, then again everyone says the wrong thing once in a while. Cheers to both of you.
No it didn’t come off as funny, work on it.
No, the “running you over with a Fleetwood” didn’t read as “funny” to me.
Two notes: The Brian Regan one is very funny as well. Also, Letterman got that sweet Volvo after being talked into by Paul Newman (who was having one made for himself). So this one is Dave’s car. Paul Newman’s car is black and in somebody else’s hands (hopefully being pampered)
Minor point: The guest in the recent episode with the Pacer is not Jason Alexander, but rather “George Costanza.”
I believe it was originally purchased by John Voight.
I’ve only actually seen the VW and Porsche ones as the links to those get passed around with my VW friends.
I’m not the biggest Seinfeld fan but he’s a big aircooled VW and Porsche guy so I’m sure we could get along haha.
Whoa. That GTO scene with Stern is the Associated market on Broadway and 21st St, Astoria, Queens…MY Associated, four blocks from my house!! How frickin random…
Been watching this for awhile and was really surprised when it showed up on the Super Bowl. You know this internet thing just may take off. Might even have serial shows like TV. Now if only Seinfeld would learn to laugh out loud.
I really like this series. I’m not a big Seinfeld TV show fan, but really like the laid back format and obvious product placement.
My favorite one so far is the Gmund 356 Coupe with Leno – that is Seinfeld’s own car and has a fascinating history:

I haven’t watched many of these, but the CCC with the 356/2 was taped partially at Jones Coffee Roasters, about five minutes from where I live. (Pasadena is a great environment for CC’s; there’s a guy who tools around in either a nicely-preserved or nicely-replicated 356 Speedster on Sunday afternoons, and I recently saw a VW Type III Karmann Ghia being delivered to a local collector on a flatbed–first one I’ve seen in the wild.)
I couldn’t concentrate on the Howard Stern one, the misaligned headlight doors on the GTO drove me nuts the whole time!
When headlight doors can outdo Howard Stern, that’s really something!
Well, at least the headlight doors on a ’69 GTO can look aligned, if they’re adjusted correctly – whereas those on a ’68 aren’t in the same plane as the grille to begin with. You’d think Jerry could have them adjusted; maybe he likes them askew?
You should call this series CCTV.
Cool cars, and of course I like the Volvo. Actually Kevin Martin sent me a link to the Volvo episode a while back. I miss Volvo wagons with boxy lines and lots of glass area. The new V60 is sharp but the quarter windows (all the side windows, actually) are tiny compared to the 940/960/V90.
