While looking through the January ‘68 issue of Hot Rod magazine (20 Year Anniversary Issue), I ran across this ad for Grant Piston Rings. Hayden Proffitt had made a name for himself running Super Stock Chevys in the early ’60s, but defected to the Rebel to set the NHRA speed record.
That is one tough-looking mofo.
Oddly enough, this ad makes me think of my mom. Whenever she saw a car with tell-tale blue smoke trailing after it, she would invariably say, “Looks like he needs a ring job.” I’m not sure where she picked up that nugget of wisdom, but she said it every single time she saw a car that was burning oil. By that, I mean this: Every. Single. Time. Probably. Going. Back. To. Before. I. Was. Even. Born.
That advertising is incomplete. There should be a little picture of my mom in the corner; the self-appointed spokesperson for the piston ring industry.
Wow! I remember this car in drag racing way back when. I was an avid reader of Hot Rod, Car Craft, and Popular Hot Rodding at the time
Yep avid reader of anything automotive back then Ive seen that picture before too and I was impressed with how my friends Dads Rebel went on the road good memories.
Not unsurprising The ’66 and later AMC V8’s had great heads and lots of performance potential…I have a Sept. ’72 Car Craft mag with an article highlighting all the factory performance parts AM had, including a dual 4BBL crossram intake manifold! Wonder what just that manifold would bring at Barret-Jackson these days….
