This is very short notice, but PDXMike emailed me this weekend letting me know about “The Shape of Speed” exhibit at the Portland Art Museum. This is an absolute must-see for me, as it covers the beginning of the aerodynamic era with the very finest examples of cars and motorcycles, including a Tatra 77A, which I have never seen in the flesh.
And then he also informed me that it’s The Portland Vintage Racing Festival, at Portland International Raceway, with the finals on Sunday. So I’m coming up for the weekend, in my van, even if it’s not fully finished. We’ll find a place to socialize on Saturday night. So if you’re in the area or can make it out, see you in Portland!
Mike and I are still fleshing out the particulars, but we’ll do the museum on Saturday, maybe about 1 or 2 PM, and then meet at our yet-to-be designated evening locale, and then do the vintage races on Sunday. I’ll post the updated details here when we have them.
I’m sorry about the short notice, but I’ve been very focused on my van and some other projects. I don’t see myself coming to the Midwest this year, but maybe next year. Or somewhere else.
And if any of you decide to come out for this weekend, and want to include Eugene for some car-spotting, I’d be happy to show you around, either before or after this weekend.
The Shape of Speed looks like a must see event, why does it have to be a continent away.
That Bugatti, those rivets, I do hope some pictures of the event are posted on this site by some kind person
Not to worry! Paul and I will make sure The Shape of Speed is well covered here.
“why does it have to be a continent away”
Could be worse, and ocean away (and $1500 flight).
Very much looking forward to the coverage!
Very cool, too far away & short notice for me. Would like to see the Promaster and take in some racing Triumphs though…
If you left last month, you could have driven the Beetle!
The exhibit goes through 9/16. If you hit the road pretty soon, I’ll meet you there anytime until then. I’m sure I’d be happy to see it again. 🙂
Bummer! That would have been fun, just can’t make it this year. Next time..
This is great news and I look forward to meeting you Paul. I will be driving my 93 Camry stick shift.
After two out-of-state trips this month I can’t manage a 3rd. Someday, though.
The exhibit goes through 9/16. If some of you want to come out later, I’d be happy to see it a second time.
Do I see a Steyr 50?
Good eye. Here’s a complete picture of one.
Yes indeed. And I remember seeing those as a kid in Austria; there were still a few around in the 50s.
As luck would have it, that’s the weekend the son and entourage is coming down to visit. Keep us posted though, and we might figure something out.
Well worth seeing. It looks like many of the cars on display were at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston a couple of years ago. If you are a car nut this is not to be missed. Enjoy.
Sounds like a great idea for a get together! I wish I could make it. It looks like the Bugatti Aerolithe will be there. I have seen this car in person and it is spectacular! For those that don’t know this was a recreation done by the Guild of Automotive Restorer’s in Bradford, Ontario (just north of Toronto). They have a small showroom with cars they have restored and that are for sale. The last time I stopped by this car was there. The recreation of this car was documented on the History Channel’s Restoration Garage.
Here is a video for those that are interested:
Wow. A very informative video about the drive to make that car. Incredibly impressive.
Thanks Vince, I had assumed at a glance it was ‘just’ an Atlantique!
