While auto enthusiasts across the Northeast and Midwest are wrapping up car show season and storing their classics for the long winter, out here in California car shows keep plugging along through November, December and January. For example, on the first Saturday of every month, a gathering of classic cars occurs here on the Palos Verdes Peninsula (The blue star on the map).
I’m suggesting a CC Meet-Up for the November 2nd event. If Los Angeles area site visitors are interested in meeting some of your fellow CC readers, contributors and posters, mark it on your calendar. Of course, there is some bad news. Like many other LA car events, the Peninsula Coffee and Cars event starts at 7:30 AM and breaks up at 9 AM. However, since this is our first shot at an LA based Meet-Up, a tight schedule gets us more people in the same place at the same time.
If there’s a solid turn out, there are plenty of other venues to support future LA Meet-Ups. Potential Spots include the Doughnut Derelicts in Huntington Beach, Cars and Coffee down in Irvine, or even Bob’s Big Boy up in the valley (a potential evening meet). For now, mark November 2nd on your calendars, and I’ll post the location information and identify a CC event gathering point on Friday the 1st. BTW- If you have your own Classic and you’d like to show off, the event is free and accepts cars on a first come equals best parking spot basis. Thanks, D/S
Sounds great! But 7:30 in Palos Verdes?
There’s also a c&c at the Westfield Topanga in Woodland Hills btw. Last month they featured a Volvo/Saab section.
Volvo/Saab? Be still my beating heart.
Early morning calls separate the men from the boys ;->
I’m working on putting a 1600 Superminx engine and box into my car along with disc brakes but really thats a bit far to drive it. Despite the fact Ive removed all the rust it wont float
I would love to, as I am in Redondo Beach right now, but I’ll be in Hawaii on the 2nd. I hope this event goes well, so that there will be other South Bay LA CC Meet-Ups in the future.
I believe Jay Leno goes to the Topanga one. At least he usually did when it was in Mulholland. One time he showed up in the Eco-Jet.
I’d have to see how far of a drive it is from where I currently am considering how early it is but definitely will try.
Wonder if Jay reads CC 🙂
Since the dude’s a complete car nut, I’m thinking yes. Perhaps not regularly (not yet; resistance is futile), but I imagine he’s at least checked out the article Paul did on the 1966 7 Liter Galaxie, since that’s an important car in Jay’s history.
He’s aware of it.
You know…that’s gotta suck for him. Poor Jay could never be “one of the guys” unless he signs on with some sort of alias. He’d be “Jay Leno” and many would probably brown-nose him for mere acknowledgment…
Makes you wonder…has he posted here in the past with a fake name…or does he frequent any forums or blogs 🙂
There’s also the LA Auto Show coming up in late November. Not classics but cars nonetheless.
I like that- Central location and lots of hours to choose from. I’ll keep it in mind. D/S
I wish I was going,I already have to wear an overcoat and gloves in the UK!
Same thing in the near-Canuckistan region of the USA (Michigan and other northern states).
A good idea–I’d love to meet other SoCal readers but will be away this weekend.
Totally off-topic, but the title of this post reminded me of the line in King Of The Road:
Last boxcar, midnight train…destination Bangor, Maine…
Let’s change it to Palm Desert! A lot better weather this time of the year, unlike Palos Verde, El Paseo is full of fine eateries. And you don’t need to get up at 7AM to brave the cold ocean breeze. There are over 120 golf courses waiting for you too.
Every Friday from Nov 1. From 3:15pm – 7pm

For you out of towners, that’s a joke- From the LA basin, a round trip to Palm Desert is about 5 hours…
Toffee- I occasionaly drive out to 29 Palms on a Friday Night, but I’m typically dropping into the Cochella Valley around 9 PM, so I couldn’t make the cruise night.
Also, who starts a cruise night in the middle of the afternoon? D/S
Jeez, 7:30 in RPV? That’s just mean — I’ve been trying to get away from being up till dawn …
Hey, I agree with you, but the parking lot starts filling with paying customers at 9, so commerce demands that the organizers start the event early. Perhaps someday the Curbside Classics name will have so much cachet we can demand a later event time.
What’s really mean is that Doughnut Derelicts down in Huntington Beach meets at the same time, and, they’re an hour from the house (with open roads). Despite that, I still get down there a couple times a year. D/S
Bob’s Big Boy in the evening during the week for sure!
I can meet at Bob’s big Boy for sure, so I second that.
Oh man, how I wish somebody who knows about putting these meetings/shows together in or around the Chicago area would do one of these. (Maybe Tom K.), I’d love to bring my CC Deadly Sin… ‘Christine’.
… another pic.
Let’s do this, at least maybe in the spring ’14, since most of us are storing now in October here in Chicago/Midwest. Mark~
Mark,
You must have missed the ’13 CC Midwest Event in Iowa City. JP Cavanaugh and I have been discussing doing a ’14 meet in Indiana to visit the Studebaker Museum and possibly the ACD Museum as well.
By the way, nice Seville!
Good morning Tom,
Yep, I def missed that one… I knew nothing of it. Anyhow, gonna post an email here, if you don’t mind, maybe you can keep me updated on anything Midwest meet or show related. I’m in the actual city proper (Chicago) but can easily travel within reason.
As far as Christine goes, thanks for the compliment, I love my Seville, the way it looks, feels and drives. The car is a 1979, 2-owner, 37K, I have the fuel injection and ECU working like new and I’m always improving her.
Here’s a link to some other pics too. If it doesnt display right here, you can copy & paste it in:

I’m in. What would you all rather see, the 2010 Challenger R/T six-speed, or the 1992 Mazda B2600i 4×4?
The Mazda if it’s still Japan built, otherwise the Challenger.
Definitely a Japanese-built “true Mazda,” rather than the disguised Rangers sold starting in ’94.
I’d want the Challenger. It is by far my favorite of the 3 current retro-style muscle cars. Perfectly executed, inside & out. And you def don’t hear people calling> ‘boy-racer’ or, over the top on it as you do with one of the other makes. Mark~
I would like to join if I can. Palos Verdes on a Saturday is less likely for me, but I could try. At least traffic wouldn’t be a problem that early. No place is convenient for everybody, but PV is not “freeway-close” at all. A great area, though!
Bobs Big Boy in Burbank happens to be relatively convenient for me, but it also has a lot of architectural significance, and has cruise nights every Friday, and apparently also on the 1st Saturday of the month (just heard this.) It’s near 3 freeways (5, 101, 134). Another option could be the Bobs (formerly Johnie’s Broiler) in Downey, which is actually fairly central if you look at a map of the entire LA/OC area. It’s also architecturally significant (recently rebuilt to match the original) and well set up for cruise nights.
If you enjoy the California coast, you can run down the backside of PV and enjoy a traffic free coastal drive. The fact that PV is not freeway friendly pretty much eliminates traffic in the area 24/7.
Bob’s Big Boy sounds like a good choice for Valley residents, but it’s a two hour drive for me on a Friday night. Unless traffic is bad, and then it’s 2 1/2 hours…
