John H has called for an inaugural catchup of the Melbourne Chapter of Curbside Classicists and I have seconded the motion. We will be attending the Australian International Concours d’Elegance and Classic Motorshow, otherwise known as Motorclassica, on Saturday 25th, which is this Saturday, which is tomorrow Melbourne time. If you can make it, we will be meeting at the north entrance at 2pm. I will be wearing a red hat with a bellyracer and ‘DLRA’ embroidered on it. Commenter or lurker, you’re one of a discerning breed so please join us.
CC Melbourne Mini-Meetup at Motorclassica
– Posted on October 23, 2014
Yay, a CC meet-up in the Southern Hemisphere! Sadly I can’t make it – it’s only a 4hr flight to Melbourne but $ etc. In lieu of my absence, I formally request photos and article(s) please!
It looks like a fun event. I must ask, however, is this in Melbourne, Australia, or Melbourne, Florida?
Motorclassica is in Melbourne, Australia.
Looks like fun. I wish I could attend. I live nowhere near Australia.
Melbourne Australia. I know Jason; unforgivable.
Unforgivable?
But Don, you did say “Australian International Concours d’Elegance and Classic Motorshow, otherwise known as Motorclassica,”.
it’s easy to drool at the photos on this site and miss some of the fine print. I do it all the time! 🙂
Geelong sub-branch here. Would seriously love to go, but I’ll be at a family party in NSW tomorrow. Maybe next year?
Thought you were more north. My mum’s family was from Geelong. This meetup is a bit impromptu, maybe next year we’ll give more notice.
Well yeah, I said Geelong because nobody much knows where my town is. I’ve moved pretty much all around Victoria during my life, but we’ve been here 22 years now.
My grandfather Don M. had a fantastic 60s modernist place in Toorak Parade just near the water. It was demolished and replaced by a carpark for the adjoining motel. Spent many a weekend in Geelong playing with Tonka Toys with my cousins. Great days.
It would be worth the trip just to step into that beautiful building in person.
I used to go to the Melbourne Motor Show every year there when I was a kid. Even sat some uni exams there. The building looks much nicer nowadays though.
Ed, I agree about the building and had to investigate. From St. Louis to Melbourne, flights range from 25 to 31 hours and expedia has price quotes of $2500 to $3600 per person.
Well, it is a REALLY nice building…
I wish I could make it, but it’s my weekend on at work. You guys have fun! I was fortunate enough to go last year. Seeing so many Lamborghini Miuras up close and in such an incredible place was quite an experience.
I am soooo jealous. What a cool building.
But not this year: #1 son starts college (university for you non-US CCers) in the fall, so maybe after #3son is done…in 9 years.
I owe Stephanie a trip to NZ (to visit Bryce, of course), but this looks like a worthy diversion to OZ if we get that close. What a gem of a building.
Have fun!
I hope you and Stephanie will stop by and visit me too! 😉 On a serious note, I think you’d find the range of cars here fascinating. I went for a drive this afternoon, and within 20km had seen a 1965 Thunderbird, an MGB, Talbot 90, Ferrari Mondial, NZ-new ’56 Chev Bel Air, etc. Bring lots of memory cards…!
Wow, fantastic building, wish I could be there too! Looking forward to reading about it, have fun!
Hmm, a little far for me. Darn it!
Well, here’s hoping you take some most excellent pictures and share them here Don. Please? 🙂
I’ll see what I can do. Still suffering from indigestion, though.
Bugga wish I could go but expired passport lack of funds take plenty off pics yall.
Glad to see the post Don. No hat for me but I will have a CC badge of some type. Must make sure I have my camera battery charged and memory card clean.
Awww… just took a two and one half hour lunch break to see this. Very well worth the effort.
Ed: The building is a World Heritage Listed site, being the only remaining intact 19thC exposition complex.
More on the stunning building here: http://museumvictoria.com.au/reb/history/the-building/
I’ll be the guy with no teeth wearing the Collingwood guernsey
I won’t be there, but make it easy for those who are. That description could fit 20 percent of the onlookers. Go Tiges!
If you look closely, the sleeve tatts are all subtly different.
Dave, you described Fred Negro to a T. Go Blues.
Gotta love the international reach of CC. Is there a more active motorhead blog anywhere? Seems like my inbox gets a post every couple of hours!
Wishing I could be there .

The inaugural CC Mini-Meetup of the Melbourne Chapter was a rip-roaring success, with John H, AVL and myself in awe of the machinery on display. John H has volunteered to write up his selection, which I am very much looking forward to given his in-depth knowledge of the broad range before our eyes. My best of show goes to the luscious Alfa 2300 Touring owned by Holden’s Mike Simcoe and beautifully restored by Paul Chaleyer, with equal best going to the only known W127 220SL extant.
Great to hear it went well today Don! I’m loving the Alfa and Merc – they’d be great subjects to write up – hint hint 😉
That is great news! Looking forward to hearing about it.
shame I couldn’t make it – will try next year!
Wasnt Mike Simcoe’s car the Lancia Aurelia we saw near the end? The array of cars on display was almost overwhelming, everything from a couple of Volvo 242 GTs to prewar exotica and some incredible cars for auction and on vendor stands. If pressed to pick a car to take home I may well have picked the Packard roadster in the auction however not quite enough for the estimated price to be tempting.
He also owns the two dark red Alfas we saw in that corner. Great to meet you in the flesh, John. Looking forward to your writings and see you next year.
Gonna try for Motorclassica next year! Watch out for a guy who looks like Papa Smurf!
Look forward to reading all about it.
It’s a shame I don’t live in Melbourne, Australia. It looks like a fun event.
Cheers Don I had a look at the info sign which mentions his name. I have the first part nearly finished and ideas for a couple more.
