As with last week’s mystery car, the whole thing is shown here, well kind of. Can you tell what this used to be? Are the two halves even from the same car? I’ve made the click-through picture extra-large this time to help spot those crucial details. No doubt somebody will know…
I’m guessing Mercury Capri convertible.
+1!
Gas door is on wrong side and square not round if we are thinking same Mercury Capri.
Geo Metro convertible?
That was my first reaction as well.
You guys are too good. That was also my guess, and Dr. Google also indicated the gas door was on the wrong side. Great minds think alike. Now if only we could figure it out….
A VW Golf? The rectangular cutout in the gray fender substructure is probably for the fender mounted turn signal.
FC RX-7
Seems pretty likely. Both the windshield and the little wraparound bit for the taillights strengthens this theory.

Definitely an FC RX-7. Poor thing.
Fuel door on the FC RX-7 is on the passenger side of the car
+3. Can even see the weather stripping on the sides of the windshield pillars that used to be covered by the door uppers that contained the vent windows. And the rear clip has horizontal rectangular tail light housings, and the fuel door is the correct location and shape.
Yep, that’s it. This really threw me until I blew the picture way up, the rear half is sliced off and reversed!
I’m wondering how or why is the windshield still intact?
As to what kind of car….
I was going to say 1990 Elan but the chopped off tail is more Capri.
Also if you google underhood shots of the Capri the curve at the top of the cowl is the same, and the big hole is where the wiper motor goes.
I wonder why someone bothered to strip it..
Yes, but wrong fuel filler location…
Yeah I was looking at that too, I thought maybe it was a part sticking out the door opening, but then I realized the rear end was turned around.
A parts car with no title would be scrapped this way.
I have had to do it myself.
???
Fiesta XR2?
Hmm. The fuel filler location implies that it’s neither Capri nor Metro. I’ve never seen one of these XR2s, but the location’s right. It just appears that the subject car has a rectangular fuel door opening, unless I’m seeing it wrong. Otherwise, I’m stumped.
Screen looks too curved for the Fiesta Mk1, and the convertible was after market, probably UK only
1984 Toyota Mr2?
Aussie Capri was my first reaction.
Ford Crapi Australias version of the 323 ragtop
Leave it to the kiwis to make an epic joke. Well done.
Honda CRX?
The back half of the car has its front side facing the garage as evidenced by the bottom door sill (cut halfway) protruding from the bottom front side of the clip. Therefore, this is a car with the fuel filler on the rear right side. It might be a VW Golf cabrio.
Um…looks like a Honda Civic wagon with the roof off.
Around 1989 (first generation) Ford Festiva with the roof cut off.
With that high curved windshield, sloping front, and what looks to be hacked off c-pillars, I was imagining a pt cruiser. it’s hard to get scale, but if those cement seams are 3 ft across, something about 6 ft long?
1980’s Straman Honda CRX Convertible. This company paired up with Honda and created a convertible version of the CRX. Not many were made

Leon, please do not show any evidence photos in CC clues. It could spoil later reader’s fun. I have done that as well and got called on the carpet.
does that rule apply to mystery car posts? Unlike clues the whole car is right in front of us in this case.
Geo Metro convertible.
Rear end is reversed. Eclipse has fuel door at about 11 o’clock on passenger side.
Steering column on “passenger’s” side says this is not US market. Text on sign reinforces this theory. So that helps narrow it down to something I can’t identify.
Yes the photo was taken in Melbourne Australia, but the car was sold globally.
I’m not buying RX7, the front is too stubby and the windshield too upright and tall. Looks more like some sort of Peugeot to me.
Zoom into the picture looking closely at where the body meets the ground. You’ll see chassis is cut in half in the center and the rear end is turned backwards. That’s why the fuel filler is on the right side center, that’s why it looks stubby and that’s why the windshield looks upright – the loose front clip is tilting forward from the weight.
I have to concede that it’s a late 1980’s Mazda RX-7.
definitely not festiva. trying to think of a car with that qwik of a sloping hood. don’t know of any cars that used drywall mud buckets for seats. this is a stumper.
RX7 would make more sense as to why someone would part it out.
kia/lotus Elan ? Look at the location of the fuel tank???
Could it be 2 cars? I think the rear clip is FC RX-7, while the front windscreen is definitely not FWD Elan (Elan’s screen looks curvier). I can’t help but think the front is from the Capri XR2.
