Well, the Pierce-Arrow seemed to go over quite well with you, our audience. Got a hankering for some more non-hot-rodded prewar cars? Never fear, for the AACA show last summer delivered in spades. Like this Packard Super 8 limousine.
I believe this blue beauty is a ’39 1705 limousine. The one problem with my attending this show is that it was storming off and on the whole time. A sunny day would have resulted in even more than the 200-odd shots I took, but unfortunately Mother Nature was not cooperating, so these are the only pics I have of this beautiful car.
And as a bonus, how about this similar-vintage Packard station wagon? Prewar classics are awesome!
About 15 years ago, my FIL’s best friend was brought to his eternal resting place in Arlington VT in the back of a 1939 Packard Henney hearse.
I thought it was a classic last ride for the old fellow. Until the straight 8 popped or blew something. We all thought he was going to have to be moved to one of the group’s minivans, but having gone ahead to the cemetary, he showed up 25 minutes late in another car.
Oh, to arrive at your own funeral late, and to (almost) get there in a Packard. Two bucket list items taken care of in one swell foop.
A Packard woody thats quite a find. packards are not rare here Parkard Promenades is a tour service that operates locally chauffeuring tourists about in the Art Deco capital where I live but not in Limos or in woodies just regular grade Packards if such a thing exists.
I love prewar Packards. I don’t believe I have ever seen one of the station wagons before. That is one big and beautiful car! I wouldn’t turn that blue sedan out of my garage, either.
Absolutely love those hood ornaments!
+1 and those streamlined headlight pods, very Art Deco
The Goddess of Speed.
How did we ever fall off this pedestal?
Stunningly beautiful.
In the Bogart classic “The Big Sleep”, the Sternwood’s chauffeur was found dead inside a Packard Super 8 limo that had driven off a pier.
The Big Sleep is known for its convoluted plot. Robert Osborne of Turner Classic Movies tells the story that during shooting director Howard Hawks got so confused that he telegraphed author Raymond Chandler to ask who killed the chauffeur, and received the reply “Oh, I don’t know.”
Beautiful cars
That wagon….droool
Both of them are incredible! The wagon, especially, looks soooo out of place in front of that newer building, though. I’m sure it would be much happier trudging up the long drive of a wooded estate, packed with old robber barons and their fox hunt gear.
I hope that shade of blue makes a comeback. I saw a Volvo S60 in a similar color last week, also while it was raining (sorry for the crummy/blurry picture), so maybe there’s some hope that it’ll catch on…
Anything to break up the omnipresent monotony of silver/grey/black/white these days….!! I get depressed walking into the average parking lot. Of course, people can only buy what is offered.
