On my continuing dog walks, I’ve been noticing quite a few cars under covers. Not just late model cars, with recognizable shapes and perhaps some modern low profile tires peeking out from below the hem, but true Curbside Classics. Let’s see how many you can recognize. Some I know, but for several I’m Curbside Clueless. I’ll start with an easy one. Not a common sight, but revealing enough to make it very identifiable for the Cognoscenti.
This one shouldn’t be too tough, though I’m actually not 100% sure on the exact version myself. Bonus points for identifying the green car lurking uncovered in the background.
This one shouldn’t be too hard, either. Unless I’m way off myself.
Now this one might be more difficult. I’m lucky to have seen this car for years, sometimes on the ground, sometimes on jackstands, occasionally being actively wrenched on (a rare sight in my ‘hood) but until recently it was fully exposing itself. Not sure I’d know what it is if I didn’t have that experience.
This one seemed obvious at first. Now I’m not so sure. In any case, I can’t tell the vintage closer than a year or two.
And this one is similar. A familiar shape … but what is it?
Here’s another one that I’ve seen uncovered for years, and I have even posted Outtakes of it once or twice. This was in the driveway adjacent to the first car in this post, and there was another car covered up further down the driveway but I didn’t dare venture down to take a picture.
I’ll end with an easy one, with some visual hints. Again I didn’t feel like going into the driveway, and the CX5 which is the odd one out, blocked a good camera angle of the undercover subject. But are the other three cousins, siblings, or even more closely related?
Undercover #1: believe it to be BMW 2000 Touring based on fastback slope in the car cover and wheel covers.
Looks to be a 2000C coupe, which was sold here, unlike the Touring.
Undercover #3: believe to be 1963 Falcon Sprint hardtop based on wire wheel hub caps and headlight bezels imprint on the car cover.
I’ll take your word on the exact year and Sprint-ness, but right away I was pretty sure it was a high-trim first-gen Falcon.
The grille says ’60-’61, even if it’s wearing later wheel covers.
I’m getting Jaguar XJ6 vibes from # 1.
I think #1 is a BMW 2000CS.
Winner winner chicken dinner!
Oops; I didn’t see your comment when I responded to comment #1.
#2 doesn’t seem easy to me. A Bricklin SV1 that a tree fell on? The green car behind it is likely a Mercedes-Benz 250 SE coupe.
My Guesses (and comments, since I’m likely way off base here.):
#1 – XJ6 – I agree with Paul’s “vibe” above. 😉
#2 – C3 Corvette – Not feeling the Bricklin guess, but that’s a good one. No idea on the green car for bonus points.
#3 – Falcon Sprint (first thing that came to mind after reading about it yesterday, but 3SpeedAutomatic beat me to it.
#4 – Buick Grand National (or GNX wannabe based on the wheels peaking out)
#5 – ’67 or ’68 Cougar was my first thought.
#6 – Stude Avanti? This is getting harder…
#7? – Curbside Clueless indeed. There is a weird elliptical shape under the cover in the front that reminds me of a weird feature from some fifties concept car… some kind of Buick LeSabre, IIRC, but it’s shaped like a truck.
#8 – I’m getting a Merkur XR4Ti vibe from that one.
Love the CX-5 BTW. Yes, I drank the damned Kool-Aid… Just bought my wife one and we both love it!
After being throughly wrong on #1, I will boldly try again on 2: mid-80s Corvette, perhaps?
Yes, it’s a C4 Corvette. I suppose with the minor (zero?) external changes over its long life it’s impossible to narrow it down more. And Paulson is correct, the car in the background is an MB 250SE.
I guessed C3, but you guys are right… it’s gotta be a C4.
#5 looks like an early Mustang.
#6 has an impossibly long hood and no rear, like the hideous 1st gen Seville coupe conversion. If the front weren’t so square, I’d say 2nd gen Camaro/Firebird.
All I can see in #4 is 2nd gen Probe, but the wheels look like RWD ones.
Is #6 a Jensen Interceptor?
#8 : I’m going out on a limb here.
Based on the two VW Sciroccos, I speculate either:
a) VW Scirocco (1st Gen)
b) VW Corrado (Audi A2 platform)
Always like the 1st Gen Sciroccos. Would make a great summer car!!
Oops, I posted my answer sheet before seeing your comment. Yes, the covered up car in #8 is a first gen Scirocco. See below.
OK, time for the answers. Some of you got ‘em, some were close, some not really in the neighborhood. Thanks for participating!
#1 – BMW 2000CS
#2 – C4 Corvette with Mercedes 250SE behind it
#3 – 1st Gen Ford Falcon is as close as I could guess. 3SpeedAutomatic thought it’s a 1963 Sprint, PaulN thinks it’s earlier.
#4 – Mazda MX6 first Gen. Ralph L was very close with Ford Probe.
#5 – I assumed it was a Mustang, probably 1965-66. But RetroStangRick suggested a Cougar. I’m still thinking Mustang.
#6 – This was tough and I didn’t peek under the skirts. But I think Ralph L may be right with 2nd Gen F Body, with the hood partially up so it looks square. Otherwise, it’s the real mystery car here.
#7 – It’s a Paul Niedermeyer Signature Edition F100. It’s also a 1966. Blue though, not yellow.
#8 – I thought I gave plenty of hints 😀 The covered up car is also a Scirocco, early 1st Gen before the 1978 refresh like the one in the foreground. As far as I can tell these three make up 60% of our local Scirocco population as I’ve only seen two others in the past five or six years.
#6 might also be missing its front fascia. That would explain the sheer dropoff.
That makes more sense than the hood up, which would be more “pokey” and not so square. Or maybe an F Body with a Seville nose grafted on. Thanks for playing and a good guess with the Probe.
It was the considerable tumblehome that I remembered. The lines over the wheelwells could have been an early Acura Legend, but the tumblehome wasn’t.
I now think you may be right about #5 being a Mustang, but I’m thinking ‘67 or ‘68, as opposed to a ‘65 or ‘66. Look at how the cover hangs across the back of the car. The ‘67 & ‘68 have that dip down in the middle, whereas the ‘65 & ‘66 goes straight across.
Of course having just said that, this would rule out my Cougar idea. 😉
Yeah, and the crease from the C pillar up to the front, below the belt line, looks more 67-68-ish too.
