As for the W196- it might have been THE perfect GP car back in its day:
Back then race cars were built for the roads they will be raced on. Today the racetracks are built for the cars that will race on them.

Well it was just possible to imagine a GP car clothed in other attire so as to make it usable for the road – and in MB’s case, there was just such a car: the 300SLR. Modern GP cars are so specialized you just could not convert one to a sports car, not even a wild one (no, the Caparo T1 is not really a road car, even if in the UK you can drive one on the road legally).
