John Dinkel, R&T’s technical Editor, did a nice series of the explanation of common automotive terms. I didn’t scan the earlier ones when I scanned the reviews from the previous issues, but now I’m wondering why. Maybe there’s still an interest in this sort of thing, even if some of it is starting to become archaic.
But if there’s enough interest, I’ll go back and re-scan the previous chapters.
Wow, some of the items described have been gone from the scene for so long, unless you own a car older than a ’75, you would be hard pressed to show someone an example. Vent windows, for instance, after about 75 they were optional, soon to disappear entirely.
CAR&DRIVER does one of these dictionaries every few years, I think they had one in the last 6 months.
Another one that’s gone with the buggy whip is “vapor lock” – even the terms used to explain it are way obsolete: “carburetor” and “float”.
I remember that, guess that means I’m vintage too.
For those of us into vintage vehicles, some mechanical refreshers would be nice. Also good from a historical perspective. Thank you Paul.
“Yoke – the yellow of an egg”. Smartass 🙂
Thanks for sharing Paul. I love all vintage articles so I’d be interested in seeing the rest of this series.
Interested! I’d love those scans, sir.
