Ford Model Y dimensions (with factory Tudor Sedan body);
Wheelbase 90 in (2,286 mm)
Length 141 in (3,581 mm)
Width 55 in (1,397 mm)
Height 64 in (1,626 mm)
This is a small car, 20″ shorter than a Honda Fit, and it’s BOF of course so the floor height is probably not that far below the bottom of the door openings on this coachbuilt body.
Ford Ys are really small cars with a tiny sidevalve engine, Alpine travel would have had a very leisurely pace, This basic car was still being produced in the UK in 1959 with styling changes and the little flathead was uprated to an earth shattering 10hp still with mechanical brakes.
30-35 actual horsepower, 10 RAC fiscal “horsepower”.
Interestingly, the German Taunus versions tended to produce a little more power than Dagenham’s, at least postwar. Whether that was due to the quality of fuels available, assembly standards, different test/rating protocols or that the Ford Pop was the cheapest real car on the UK market while Cologne had to keep their market positioning slightly above VW isn’t certain.

The Tudor Model Y was selling at one time for just £100 sterling, so this tourer was for the well-off customer…
The price is equivalent to £12,831.60 (currently $17,207) so about the price of a new Citroen C1 at the moment.
So are those ladies about 4’8”?
You don’t suppose this was the first instance of using shorter than average people to make a car appear much larger than it really was?
