Let’s have a bit of fun with fashions today. One more gallery in this series of folks and their period attires, all displayed near some vintage metal of the era. A showcase of the fads of the time, and this time with quite a few photos that almost seem to tell a story.
The images are more or less chronological, at least as much as I can tell from the cars and the fashions in them.
Was that Dart perhaps a “swinger” model?
Mom and the Missus. And a very sensible CAA membership sticker.
I think that’s a ’77 Olds 98 peeking out from the other side of the garage. Reminds me of my aunt and uncle from Montreal that always had one cheap Plymouth (including a Scamp) and one big plush New Yorker or Fifth Avenue. And probably a CAA sticker on it somewhere.
Believe it’s a “Valiant Scamp”. (tail lights clue)
The ‘woven’ fence behind the ’64 Chrysler was all the rage for a while, then disappeared. It was a practical design, blocking vision while letting wind through.
HI HO! SUNSET MOTEL! Family units? QUEENS? REC ROOM? Hey, Guy! You lookin at ME? Whats UP? 😉 Maybe the Dart isn’t the ONLY Swinger! 😁 🤣
Sun appears to be coming back after a “downpour” as well.
I love how well the cars match their owners; such a reflection of how folks bought cars. Almost each one is a perfect match for them; the one exception being the last guy in front of the Matador; that one is all wrong. The parents’ car?
The young woman with her Pontiac Sunbird coupe is too perfect for words. That’s exactly who bought these. And the guy who scored the old Studebaker coupe is perfect too. The young woman with the Firebird is almost a dead ringer for one who lived in our neighborhood and had a new Camaro of the same vintage. Well, I could go on…
These really reflect the wide range of styles, sizes and images cars had back then; it seems to me that there’s not quite as much clear-cut diversity in those qualities these days, but that may well just me being an old fart.
I love the family with the red car. I cannot place the car, however. HELP! I hope that after that third boy that they decided that enough is enough. Sweet phot. My second like is the one just below with the two girls. Check out the swag stance of the girl on the right. Adorable. Thanks for all of the photos. I’m one of us who lived through these times. Sometimes we have to laugh as in the attached photo. YEEEEHHHH, she’s got a heavy date tanite.
Plymouth Satillite
Red car behind the young Mr. Douglas, his wife, and 3 sons looks to be at first thought a Duster. However, it is more likely a Satellite.
“I’m sorry Miss…you need to pass through our secondary TSA security check.”
Flammable hairspray, lit cigarette, what could go wrong?
The red Satellite had to have been a company car. Agree dude with the Matador doesn’t add up.
Of all of these photos, that one has the least “me and my car”/”us and our car” vibe to it. The car seems incidental, just the happenstance background where he posed. Unlike, say, Sunbird Girl who is clearly posing with her car.
I’m usually oblivious to what clothing fashions or especially hair styles correspond to what era, but that hairdo in the lede photo just screams mid-1960s (maybe late ’60s), as does the dress (which is a near match to the ’70s kitchen wallpaper in my childhood home).
The first picture gets me thinking of Nancy Sinatra. Or Beth from Yellowstone!
Every single one of these is perfect each in their own way. It’s hard to pick a favorite.
It took me a while to figure out just what was going on inside the car in the lede photo. Nice looking lady…and I eventually figured out, her dog.
The couple washing the Buick is an odd one too. I sort of get the sense that the guy might essentially be photobombing the picture. They just don’t look like they go together.”Lenny…GO HOME!”
Neither of the people standing behind the Trans Am looks ready to play tennis. Perhaps they’re just holding the racket for the photographer.
The lady with the Charger and the bicycle probably spent/has spent many years asking that the photographer NOT show that picture, even though he would continually slip it into family slide shows.
So yeah, that one is probably my favorite 🙂
I agree that the couple (or perhaps “pair” is a better term) washing the Buick is an odd photo. I was thinking maybe they’re brother and sister – though the Buick doesn’t seem to suit either of them.
The couple with the Charger and bicycle in the trunk is one of my favorites here. Looks like it could easily be a scene from some cult-classic movie taking place in the 1970s.
The girl with the H-body Sunbird is probably my favorite here. I just imagine that being her first car, or maybe the photo’s occasion was her getting her driver’s license. But I wonder how quickly it took her to sour on the Sunbird. I bet ten years later she was driving a Honda.
Gonna track down the location for the “Sunset motel” pic? Gatlinburg maybe?
That was a tough one, since there’s lots of Sunset Motels, but I’m pretty sure that one was in Custer, South Dakota. Matches up with the location below (there’s a Days Inn on the same site now):

What struck me about the Buick picture is that the woman is holding the water hose and looks dressed for the beach – or a car wash – while the man is wearing what looks like hard leather shoes, leather belt, and full-length pants that wouldn’t dry quickly. I wonder if he even helped wash the car, or just posed for the photo.
This gentleman could have told people, he was former Montreal Expos owner Charles Bronfman (inset), and heir to the Seagram’s Whiskey fortune. And some people might have believed him.
I especially noticed that a good cigarette was essential before a bike ride and so immense and beautiful is the rear of a ’68 Charger ; the opening does not allow you to fit a 10 speed without dismantling it. Even Youppi couldn’t fit in there.
Except that it’s not a ’68, the tail lights were round only on the ’68 models. 🙂
I like the 1960 Ford Countrysquire, 1961 Buick, girl in bikini and guy in a wife beater undershirt.
I think the Buick might be a 62 Skylark. It appears to be a pillarless hardtop, IRRC first available in 62. I think the mid-year 61 Skylark came in pillared coupe form. As a kid I liked these cars very much and still do. Great picture.
Nice pictures .
Reminding me of why I don’t miss the 1960’s very much .

Totally – I just don’t see a hot guy with a matador sedan. I would pair him with Chevy pickup, Jeep CH or MAYBE Camaro.
What a bunch of great shots! The trim and hubcaps on the AMC suggests Ambassador to me rather than Matador, which suits the guy even less.
This shot of my daughter with the VW goes well with the set, although my photo was taken around 2018.
Cute photo and at small scale could be from another era. But when you open it up it’s definitely modern, don’t know if that’s due to the quality or small details like the armband or what but it doesn’t pass muster as a photo from the 60’s. Maybe if your daughter was smoking it would fit more!
Trousers from Hell – all of them !
I love the family photo in front of the red Plymouth Satellite. That car was nearly new, as it was still sporting its thin double-whitewall tires. All I can think is how much polishing is in that guy’s future if he wanted to keep that red car looking nice.
The 64 Chrysler by the white fence is the relatively rare 4 door hardtop, which I think was the best looking body these came in.
I had completely forgotten about that short fad in houses as shown on the lede photo – the odd little fence along the front edge of the roof. I remember seeing a few of those when I was a kid.
Don’t forget me!
That 61 Buick was a looker. I had a four door version for my first car. Did I see a girl in a bikini in that picture?
Going off to College? Dad packing the new red 10 speed bicycle, in trunk of 1970 Dodge Charger in Oklahoma !! Lucky Girl!!
Love all these photos, it was a time when the world was a happy place and cars were cars with style and class.
The red ’74 Pontiac Trans-Am, I would kill to have that today in 2024………Can help but think is there a SD 455 tucked under the hood ?, not to mention the car looks brand new in the photo.
What kind of car is that white one? The one with the guy in the Jean shorts in front of?
It’s a ’55 or so Studebaker, either a Commander or President.
