I love old truck photos, but they’re always better when there’s a driver in the shot too. This guy has quite a pose too; somewhere between proud and bored. Proud of his big old International K Series truck? Bored with hauling hay?
Vintage Truck: Hay Hauling International

I hope no sparks come out of that exhaust stack.
I hope he’s careful with his cigarette butts, too.
I thought rolled-over cuffs on jeans were just for growing kids.
Hay hauling can get real exciting with fire hazard mentioned above but also how well the load was stacked and secured. I don’t like how the front was stacked with openings for air to start blowing the whole load out. My back and hands are sore just looking at those big bales that are probably wire tired to boot.
Man, I was thinking the same thing–I’m tired just looking at that load.
And the job is only half done. There’s a hot, dusty barn at the end of this trip.
we mowed hay in the extreme heat of the summer and then sold it in the extreme cold of winter. you would think the cold would have been better but I’m not so sure, trucks wouldn’t start or got stuck in the snow.
Give me big bales moved with equipment or better still put the chopped hay up in a silo.
We used to always see trucks with bales of hay parked under overpasses when the rare rainstorm threatened in the summer/fall, because if I understand it if the bales got wet they could easily combust.
If the bales get wet they can easily grow mold and not be palatable fodder.
Great photo. Thanks.
Of all the vehicles on the road I always give by far the widest berth to are the hay haulers. I bet drivers are pretty wiped out after loading up all those bale’s and don’t have the energy to throw a tarp over them.
Interesting….and strange pose for a man. One hand on hip and other on head. Looks like a feminine pose.
Great old photo ! .
I never loaded this much hay but we did indeed load our old Cornbinders as full as we could, I remember one time Larry slammed on the brakes and the load shifted sufficiently to bulge the front of the bob tail bed a bit, his wife (she was a cutie) slid off the bench seat and banged both knees on the heater control knobs, cutting her knees .
They were early 1950’s L – Series gasoline powered trucks we got from Ayers A.F.B. dirt cheap .
